My daughter gave me my old Suburban back a few years ago ( she bought a new Tahoe) and didn't tell me it only had water in it ( she was living in Florida and failed to get antifreeze after some repair work she did) . It cracked the engine block
Hope you have better luck
I was driving from Canada back into Washington through the Okanogan valley when the lower radiator hose blew.
I didn't hear it, the temperature gauge stayed normal and it was fine until the engine started slowing down.
I pulled over and opened the hood to see oil boiling on the engine (oil pooled from a small leak) and a small trickle of coolant from the lower hose.
It was about 110F and I waited for the engine to cool. Once it had cooled enough to work on it I removed the hose and found a 4 inch split. I went to the trunk and pulled a new hose out and installed it. I checked the oil and it was fine, though a little darker. I slowly filled the radiator with water I had and started the engine. It ran but it was a bit low on water so I pulled into the next farmers driveway and asked If he would sell me some water. He said if I had needed gas it would have been real expensive but I could have all the water I needed for free. I filled the engine and my two gallon jugs. I offered him a $10 bill and he refused it. I thanked him and went home.
Ultimately the only thing wrong was a mild "harmonic" sound at certain RPMs. I had bent or twisted the crankshaft just a tiny bit. I replaced the 170 CID engine because I wanted the 200 for a bit more power and the extra main bearings. I put 200,000 miles on the new engine and drove that 1962 Falcon station wagon until the front suspension broke. I also replaced the rear end twice before I realized that the 7.5" gear set wasn't made for the abuse I gave it.
Looks like the radiator and at least one plug. it was a brand-new radiator too, just put it on in the spring. right now the white elephant is the least of my worries.
