Yes most of the houses in my neighborhood are off grid completely and or left in the dark. Our electricity and gas provider gave us 12 hours notice to permanently de-energize the entire neighborhood! Also splitting in two. It’s ugly. We prepped 2 yrs ago for this. Propane, back up gen y. Getting a franklinwh battery. Will do my own solar. It’s trying times and most of my neighbors are clueless in the dark. We have an ATS 24kw Generac 1000 gallon propane all appliances converted. Manual transfer switch for battery power and 2 back up generators all running on tri fuel plus a 3000kwh goal zero battery and a 5000 w auto inverter on my defender 110 with a 250 solar panel and 1000 lipo4 battery tied into a huge alternator to also power the house. No land movement on my property.

That type of generator and tank is what my Son-in-law sells and gets installed in FL, AL and TN. He's being busy lately and in near history more orders are coming in, and the oldest grandson is an emergency generator tech to service and repair them. He's been staying down in FL. I am glad to hear you were as ready as could be, and maybe you'll be able to be of some assistance to your local friends.

I saw articles online about the large continuing landslide there. I am sorry to hear that you are part of that.

Does insurance pay for any of this? Or do they call it some kind of "naturally occurring phenomenon" that they can decline payouts for? I don't see things ever getting better for you folks that live there. The land is not going to repair itself. I'm glad to hear that your land hasn't moved. Let's hope that it does not in the future. But now are you permanently without electricity, water and sewer? You're probably out of any potential insurance payouts since you are "unaffected". If you can call no utilities "unaffected".

Rebuilding a house or even fortifying what's left of it when it sits on top of land like that doesn't really seem feasible to me. What do you do when the house finally tears in half and you can see the sky through the gaping split in your living room ceiling? You're still intact now, and that's good, but how much money is worth spending creating a totally off the grid living situation there? That could get really expensive. Would anyone even come out and install a septic tank, drill a well, or install a solar setup on land like that? Could they even get their equipment there over the collapsed roads?

Wow! I pray for your continued good fortune with your stable land and hope for a reasonable solution to long term living there for you.

The federal government plans to give Rancho Palos Verdes $42 million to finance buyouts for the homeowners hardest hit by the ongoing landslides in the Portuguese Bend area, with the properties eventually converted into lower-risk open space.

Federal Government = FEMA

and nothing for Helene victims.

Isn't that nice, the taxpayers are buying people out who never should have bought or built on unstable ground.
My sentiments exactly. If I chose to build a mansion on the side of a cliff, and it fell over, should I expect the government to bail me out?

I guess this is similar to paying off school debts?

Remember, unless you vote differently, expect the same to be repeated over and over again!
