A trivet is something that spaces your hot cookware off the countertop/table. I don't usually need them unless it's a multiple pot dinner like Thanksgiving or Christmas.what's a trivet?? Is this the thing that goes on the gas stove?

Off topic: that’s what my great grandmother did as a child in winter. Put a brick on the stove then wrap it in a towel or rag and put it by your feet when going to bed.I used a block of black granite from the counter top place, it also held heat for hours.
Exactly.Have you considered a double boiler? Pot #1 goes on stove, add water to it, pot #2 nestles in pot #1. These are used for cooking or melting delicate things that you don't want to scorch. The bottom pot spaces the upper pot higher above the burner, but that is not what keeps the temperature down - it's more the water inside the bottom pot that keeps the temp down. You ALWAYS put water in the bottom pot. Putting it on the burner without water inside would destroy the pot.
