There's an old saying to the effect of "don't put money in the stock market you can't afford to lose".
Yea, the market goes down, sometimes pretty badly but in general and over longer periods of time, it always trends upward. E.g. Dow 30 is ten times higher than it was 30 years ago, even with the crash in 2008.
I will have to point out that there is a big difference in 'putting your money in the stock market' and buying stock in individual companies.
The ones I have pay fat dividends to me like clockwork, rain or shine.:)
Do I care if the share price goes up or down?
Not in the least, because I ain't selling, unless they stop sending me muuney!:waiting:
The main thing is, to not feed the millionaire mutual-fund managers that will regularly dip their cup into your funds.

We do have some individual stocks that pay dividends quarterly as well.
Haven't lost (yet) but sometimes I get concerned.
E.g. the Mrs has investments in Allstate and Prudential. Both have been sending dividend checks.
What concerns me is they can take a huge hit at any given time. E.g. Hurricane Ian.

You can get dividends from several mutual funds as well. Myself, I just have them automatically reinvested since I don't need the cash right now.

Agreed on not feeding the fund managers. We had a "managed account" and they were charging us A LOT (like 2%+ annually). We dumped them altogether, moved our money to Fidelity and put it in a self managed account. Most of the funds we're in (across the board) have an expense ratio between .06% to .30%.

Both of those companies are 'rock-solid' (Prudential pun).
Finding ones that will pay you well is not that hard...

5.78% yield. Hmmm. Yes, they pay me every 3 months. :D
(notice the 'revenue per employee' number:oops:)
That is something I pay a lot of attention to.

Is that an easily accessible site that shows that detail?

only stock I have (that’s not in my 401k) is from the corporation I work for. We can purchase stock at a 10% discount off the lowest price during set 6 month periods. It pays a dividend and I just reinvest it.

Just click the magnifying glass icon on the top bar and type in the name of the company you want info on.
(Note: PG&E is NOT the company I referenced above with a 5.78% yield )

Lost & gain is part of the market.
I lost $140,000.00 a year before I retired.
Agreed.

We were talking with our advisor last night discussing world events and the effects on the markets and ended up doing the "which way do we go?" thing.

So I turned the conversation from " up or down"...

too

What if we are already in WWIII , where so we invest for a world at war?

So our homework is to figure how to deploy funds to thrive in world war.

Anyone have ideas?

Quality farmland in a super low population location. With a habitable structure, abundant and redundant water. Pretty much what Bill Gates and Ted Turner have been doing covertly for decades.

I lost $140,000.00 a year before I retired.
The rest of the story is: I made $364,000.00 over my investment in that one stock, that I lost $150,000.00, with no training to speak of, had my Father taught me what I taught my children. I could have retired at 55 years of age, four years earlier than I did.

Ancient white trash saying:
When times is good, you brew shine and grow weed,
when times is bad, you brew meth. when times is real
bad, you grow corn so's you can eat!
Pass the buttermilk b1tch. LMAO

But no really, we're getting into corn pone territory.

Do not forget to registration your guns & garden, before you plant that corn!

I'll tell members straight.......that was super accurate video. And if you watched and listened at the end when he said it is going to happen everywhere. It is.

And I have been saying people must pay very-very close attention to Europe. The "HELL" that is coming to Europe will be here in six to nine months. "OR LESS".

I agree this is worldwide.
At this point it doesn't really matter who is in charge in Washington.
I fully expect a worldwide depression. Perhaps even a replay of the Great Depression.

As for my wife and myself, I hear a line from Bob Dylan - "When you ain't got nothin' you got nothin' to lose."
The only investment in the market I have is a very small 401K at my part time job. I don't even know how much is in there, I never have bothered to register and get sign in credentials.

I expect it to be MUCH-MUCH-MUCH-MUCH worse. We know how the last Great Depression ended..........WW-II. (I expect 1.5 to 3.4 billion humans dead)
It is interesting to also note that the common accepted history is that WWII started in 1939 (Sept 3).

But if you lived in China, it started in 1937.

....and if you lived in the Sudetenland, it started in 1938........

.....and if you lived in other parts of Czechoslovakia, it started on 16 March 1939.......so it all depended upon where you lived.

........hmmmm, sounds a bit familiar.

Well, since Japan's incursions into Manchuria, and China only involved those countries, that would not count toward the beginning of WW2.
And since Hitler's takeover of the Rhineland, Austria, and Czechoslovakia did not prompt any response from major powers, the beginning of WW2 is deemed to be the German invasion of Poland on Sept 1, 1939.

I do expect a widespread economic difficulty but I don't expect World War III. As I see this, it's the end result for a worldwide Statist movement. We'll see people struggling for food and roofs over their heads and governments worldwide will step in and "provide" those things, at the cost of most or all personal liberty. The people will accept this willingly, because western society has been conditioned to not be suspicious of government involvement in their lives. So in return for "bread and circuses", i.e. free internet and government cheese, we will in effect become the cold war Soviet Union. The youth of America already want this, because they have no idea what it means...

Time to get all biblical.. Some of us have a saying:
You might not care for their god, but you'd better
listen to their prophets.
Ever wonder why the US is NOWHERE to be found when Gog, Magog, China, and Persia are rolling up on Israel's doorstep?
We're not around to help anymore! Whatever has happened, has us in
such dire straits, we can't help! Or maybe we won't? if we have a turd like we have now in office or we've been bribed off maybe? best case scenario.
Worst case scenario is we don't exist anymore! We've broken up into smaller countries, we've been EMPed/nuked, we're eyes deep in a depression or in any case, have problems of our own. I still see us as a spiritual Babylon needing Nebuchadnezzar to come back. We're certainly not getting in its way, in fact you guys were written off a decade ago. one of the reasons I'm here against orders.

No, this is not TEOTW. The country has simply stubbed it's toe and we will be in pain for a while.
We have done this before. :(
