Actually I think the idea of hauling the water from the creek much harder to overcome than the thought of bears. I can shoot bears. I can't avoid using water and I think that chore would get onerous after a while....just my thoughts. Sounds like a tough, narrow life, Sourdough, but some of the pictures you post of the breath-taking beauty and peace all around show the trade-off.
Maybe you could just simmer down some of your local fruit for a treat, without the need to do the water bath canning and adding sugar and pectin and all that. Might be nice for an occasional change of pace.

Great chart!!
There are a few out there.

ProductSpread ConsistencyFruit SizeOther Additives
JamThick and liquid.Relatively small, the fruit is chopped or crushed.Sugar is added for both flavour and as a preservative.
JellyA thick gel that holds it shape, but can be easily spread. The fruit is strained, so it contains only the fruit juice.Sugar and pectin for both flavour and as preservatives.
MarmaladeSimilar to jelly.Usually contains only fruit pulp and rind, the only solid is the rind.Contains added sugar, but often no added pectin.
PreservesA soft smooth spread.Contains either whole small fruits (like berries), or chunks of larger fruit (like apples)Sugar and pectin for both flavour and as preservatives.
ConservesChunky and thick.Contains dried fruit and nuts, as opposed to other products.Often has added spices and liquor.
ChutneySimilar to jam.Contains crushed or chopped fruits and vegetables.Usually has vinegar and spices, in addition to sugars.
Fruit ButterThick, but very smooth. The fruit is pureed, so there are no whole chunks of fruit.Often does not contain as much sugar, so they usually don’t last as long. There is no butter added.
ConfitWhole chunks of fruit. The fruit is left whole. Also known as candied fruit, as they are preserved in pure sugar.
CurdSmooth and creamy spread.Only the fruit juice is used.Beaten egg yolks, sugar, fruit juice and zest are cooked until smooth.

I have made ...Jello... jelly.. Don't have the recipe anymore, but raspberry is my favorite..
Also have helped make all kinds of jams.. Also helped make several different marmalades.. I did prep work in cutting up lemon, lime, orange rinds also shredding zucchini as a filler.. I like pretty much any citrus mix and one that included crispy fried, very fine crumbled bacon.... Where is a big smiley face available ??
