Kentucky...

Jim

I went to a coworker's house and she had 7 of the biggest black German Shepards I have ever seen. All were wearing muzzles. After I parked they all ran over to my truck and as I got out I saw 2 had slipped off their muzzles. I thought I was in big trouble but she said "down" and all 7 laid down and stayed there. She knew her stuff when it came to training dogs. I wanted a pup but they were very expensive because she trained them for search and rescue.

I give my pups odd commands, not the normal come, sit, stay, down. So unless someone knew them, they would have no idea what they were asking them to do. They did, however, catch on to most of the common terms and would do as asked from about anyone.

‘Down” was “Relax” with the corresponding eye/head movement and hand signal.

“Sit” was “and?” with the corresponding eye/head movement and hand gesture.

To get them to growl or look menacing: “Do we know them?” while pointing to someone.

To get them to stop “They are a friend”.

For strangers in the yard, like the UPS delivery they knew to say “I have a box.” And the pup would turn from a barking menace into a wriggling, happy mess. Folks could yell anything else at them and they would not stop barking.

Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life outta nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops.
