I want to thank everybody for their input , it really helps, I am either missing something, or missing an "app", my lubuntu system (the one OldSchool linkes to) recognizes my samsung android A17, and my old Cannon digital camera, but I can't figure out how to get lubuntu to find or transfer the pictures.

Did you try gphotofs?
"sudo apt-get install gphotofs"
Then plug in the camera.
I don't know if this works with phones or not.
