To prevent a calf from knocking over a water bucket, you can try placing the bucket inside a tire. The weight of the tire makes it difficult for the calf to tip over the bucket by stepping on it or pawing at it.
 
The amish guys around here either use a solar heater or you see them out with a pick axe breaking ice a few times a day.
I looked in to using solar for my stock tank too, but the system would be so large that it's cost prohibited. Also during winter we have weeks of fog and overcast sky's, and weeks of near zero temps. So once a day I take the ice out and refill the tank. The cows have learned to drink while I'm refilling the tank.
