I've decided to prep because its been in my mind for a while but my family laughs and thinks I'm crazy to think things like government take over or invasion of other countries on our soil. But I said I'm doing it I just wont discuss it with them ill store stuff in a place they don't usually look in lol. I'm a RN but lately I've been a stay at home mom. my favorite gun is my 22 rifle. I know it doesn't pack a powerful punch but it's accurate not to loud and doesn't have a kick back. I figure a shot in the head will do just as good as any other gun. lol I have a lot to learn but I'm excited to get started. i am undecided on food to buy MRE's or food 4 patriots? what dose the average prepper get?

Welcome to the forum. You can prep without them even realizing it. Start with water storage. Build on your groceries. As autumn approaches, canned goods are on sale. I am a major advocate for couponing. Couponing and prepping can go hand in hand. As an RN you already have a major jump on prepping. You have medical knowledge and skills!

howdy .... and welcome to the forum and family...there's quiet a few knowledgable folks here that'll gladly tell ya what you need to know,or at least point ya in the right direction and/or give ya a good idea or 2..and by all means jump right on in with any replys you have on a topic.and start new topics if/when needed....

i see that your from louisiana..hurracanes is a good reason to prep.look at what happened when katrina came through.and the other ones as well..not sure about flooding there.but if that does happen where you live.thats another reason to prep.like others has said.stock up on food and water.buy extra foods that you know you and your family will eat.canned foods can be heated up,or simply eaten right out of the can.might even plan on a way to get out of there if needed.to me that means planing more then one route,on acount sevral routes might be blocked in some way or another.or just not safe enough route to take..being a RN you have a way to bargin for things that are needed when it comes to you and family..

MRE's are good for the short term (a couple of days worth) canned goods, dry beans, rice etc... would be a better investment. I prefer to only keep 30 day supply of emergency freeze dried buckets such as augason farms 25yr shelf life, the rest is bulk beans, rice, salt, sugar, flour, lots of tuna fish etc.. I tend to stay away from MREs due to expense Vs relatively short shelf life of 5yrs if stored @60deg F. Almost all canned goods will last 5yrs or longer, that's a lot of canned goods for the price of one case of MREs ;)

one of my first thoughts were actually to stock up on mre's...now it's cans, dry stuff like rice etc.. I have one 24hrs meal box, that's all, have root veggies in my rootcellar, buy potatoes next time in february I think...,have my freezers filled with meat and fish..every time I visit my favorite surplus store I do look at the selection of mre's there, but just look

This is generally right on the money, despite dates on cans.

However, I can say that canned fruits will have a funny taste after about 3 years (but still be safe).
Canned milk will be off after about 2 years, both in taste and safety. (would just make you sick to your stomach)

For dairy, powdered is the way to go. This is about the only real "survivor food" I try and stock up on (powdered milk, butter, cheese, and eggs). The rest is more geared towards:

1. Livestock sources (like keeping chickens and rabbits). With chickens, you get eggs. When they stop laying, you have chicken meat. With rabbits, these things just keep on multiplying, and their short gestation and rapid growth would keep you in meat pretty well. We may get goats too, but not until next year if then.

2. Produce sources such as fruit trees and bushes, a garden for veggies, and a fresh herb and medicinal herb garden.

3. Buckets of dry beans, dry pasta, rice, cereals, popcorn, dried corn, mashed potato flakes, flour, sugar, salt

4. Home Canned foods (produce, prepared soups, stews, sauces, meats)

5. Store bought foods, dry goods, canned goods.

MREs are for on the go, like while traveling to your base, or scouting, etc. Even then, there are cheaper options. Personally, I like the dehydrated meals made for hikers over MREs, for a bug out bag, for example. The Mountain House beef stew is pretty yummy. Tried them for lunch occasionally, but not often, as $6 a pop is pretty steep for a brought lunch.

haven't found powdered eggs here,or butter for that,go to local camping store and ask...they are like question marks..big ones ;)

Should be some sites that would ship to you internationally, I'd imagine.

I agree with the majority of the posts here. Many new preppers fall into the "lets go buy a bunch of supplies for the end of the world". Read and learn as much as you can before going shopping for things. Knowledge will go a lot further than supplies anyways. Overlord had the right idea on the buy what you eat thing. If you stock up on stuff, first make sure it's something you like! Second, eat it, and rotate as you do. I keep a pretty good pantry stocked, partly so I never run out of things, and partly incase I loose my job or get hurt. I'm pretty good about rotation/date checking. If something is getting close to expiration I either eat it or donate to a local food bank. I do have a weeks supplies of mre's stored in the car for emergencys, but everything else food wise is either store bought cans, dry goods stored with oxy absorbers or home canned stuff from the garden. All of it are things I normally use and eat daily.
Oh, welcome to the site!

Doing this, means your days are actually numbered (i.e. by how many supplies you have).

A true prepper devises ways of having RENEWABLE resources. ;)

Exactly! supplies food and water are only temporary unless one can renew what is being used. I push water above all because one source is not enough for the long haul, without water nothing lives nothing grows. Relying on one well or one creek isn't enough for the long term, we have preppers relying on the Columbia river in a poste-SHTF, they are in for a rude awaking! that river will become badly polluted in a post-SHTF because of hundred or so communities that are next to the river all the way up to Canada. I also notice people are storing the wrong seeds for this area, some garden foods don't do good here at all and they don't take into account our growing seasons can be cut short. I know I sound like a broken record but one has to know their geographic and learn the old ways, without that knowledge things will become harsh in short order, one has to know 'were does the water come from' 'whats up stream that will affect the quality' research research research

Welcome from another Louisiana cajun. Hope all goes well with your prepps.I'm in south Louisiana. I will try to help you in any way I can. Just let me know if you need anything.
