I presume this is typical in Alaska.

That upper field was terraced. The peach trees were set out on top of the terraces. In between the rows of trees we grew hay on most of it. Some years we had 4 acres or so of produce to sell at the farmers market. In late summer, fall and winter it provided graze for the cattle. We tried to use every inch of that field year round.

The peach trees are gone now. My great nephew runs cattle on it year round. Done correctly it'd provide hay and then graze but the kid is 19, won't listen to anything.

I did something tonight I haven’t done in ages… I was running out of time yesterday and didn’t finish plowing everything I wanted to, had to go stay with dad. I left the gang disk attached to the tractor when I parked it under the shed.

About 10:30 tonight I stepped outside, a storm front is approaching. It was warm, in the 60’s, wind gusting, starting to smell like spring and I thought why not?

I grabbed a jacket and fired up the tractor. It’s been a long time since I plowed at night. I did a lot of it as a youngster. It’s different, I’d plow by feel since I couldn’t see as well. The feel of the engine, rpm and load, the sound and feel of the plows, everything had meaning... Best of all, the smell of fresh turned earth…

I posted the following on 25Feb18…

I need a versatile Radio

It started when I was about 13. My grandpa farmed 600 hundred acres of cotton. During spring planting several tractors were running 24/7. I’d get off the school bus around 4. Grandma would have a supper packed for me in a paper bag. She’d take me to a field to relieve someone, usually grandpa. I’d spend the next 6+ hours on a John Deere 4020.

It had an am radio on it. I always listened to a station in Chicago. At 10:10 pm a funny show would come on. I believe it was reruns of “The Lum and Abner Show”. It also meant my night was almost over, an uncle would relieve me at 10:30pm and take me home first.

I remember this one field… There was a creek at the bottom of a hill at the timber line. Seems like every spring I worked that field “Honey Suckle” would be blooming and that scent filled the entire field.

It only took about 40 minutes to finish all the plowing I intended tonight. The rains will set in early tomorrow morning. It was a walk down memory lane…

Pic… My grandpa on one of the tractors I used as a kid. Just a few years before he turned me loose in a field. I was a bit too young when this photo was taken.

My grandson and the team won the first regional play game in tournament last night...tough game 65 to 59.
Next game before championship game will be Monday night...they should win.
Then the championship.
He's #33. 6'5" ... 250 lbs.
With a beard.
He's a senior , so these are last times I get to see him play.
