This my be the answer to my problem ...

I installed a 1/4" steel cover over our mailbox and someone put a dent in it just about the same as this one, if they were in a car, I hope it broke their back window or at least sent a jolt through their arm heavy enough so that they won't try that again.
IdeaI’ve been looking for the perfect sapling to make a staff for a year. I cut a few but wasn’t happy with any of them, there was something wrong with each one.
I found one the perfect size and shape earlier this week. Downside… it’s privet hedge, soft wood. If it dries hard enough it’ll be a keeper. I’ll know in about 3 weeks.
This one is 3/4 to 1" the entire length with a perfect fork at the top. When dad and I still raised cattle I always had a heavier staff 1" to 1.5" in diameter. I don't need one for working cattle anymore but still need one big enough to take on a big rattler or cottonmout.

For snake control, I'm leaning more towards this:When dad and I still raised cattle I always had a heavier staff 1" to 1.5" in diameter. I don't need one for working cattle anymore but still need one big enough to take on a big rattler or cottonmout.
Yeee!

For a dead cotton-mouth (water-moccasin), the diameter of my forearm, I'd gladly toss it and get a new chain for 10 buck$.Yeee!
Wouldn't you have to sharpen the chain after every snake?
Ben
I'm thinking even a dull chain might work well enough.Wouldn't you have to sharpen the chain after every snake?
You can't go wrong with Dogwood if you have them growing on your place.

If anyone thinks @Haertig 's idea is 'overkill'...I'm thinking even a dull chain might work well enough.
We can fix that.I've got a snake grabber. We've used it a number of times, but don't have anything venomous here.
Dogwood is extremely hard and dense it is harder than most anything we have hereLots of dogwood around but I never seem to notice it until it's booming, too big for a staff then. I've never considered it for a staff so I don't look for it. I'll keep my eye out for a young one from now on, thanks. I usually look for water oak or hickory, pecan makes a nice staff also.
They are mentioned all thru the 'Good Book'.Nope.
Yeah. I know them both. Prefer the Mennonites. Great people. That'd be the pentecostals. Not the mennonites. Those snake people are creepy
I know a few like that .
