Preparations Update

Plan on buying more at the store. They're always good for making casseroles

Since I've been reading where the potato farmers are having major problems harvesting their crops because of the winter storm I plan on stocking up on dried and canned potatoes. I expect the price to go up here quickly

They are usually pretty cheap this time of year and especially into Thanksgiving time. Time will tell, but I'd bet you are right!

Our local supermarket had 10% off on online orders on Wednesday so I took advantage of it big time on items we needed to stock up to a 12 month level on.

We increased our food storage by -

- 1 carton of corn kernels.
- 6 tins of green beans.
- 1 carton of tinned lychees.
- 1 carton of tinned mangoes.
- 1 carton of baking choc chips.
- 6 x 500g olive oil spread.

These are things that never come on special here and usually I only get 5% off.

My stocking up is in good shape for my age, my power requirements are in good shape. My defenses are in good shape as far as ammo and weapons.

I'm starting to think more about fortifying my perimeter as a defense. Been working on it slowly over the years , thorny hedges here and there.
Now I'm getting serious about some serious perimeter defenses.

Bought 4 more bags each of shredded hashbrowns and the o'brien style to dehydrate


Checked the prices of the walmart brand of veggies and they're still 50 cents a can. the shelves were also full of all brands and so were the canned fruits.
Plan on stocking up when ( if) they go on sale for the holidays, which should be right after Halloween
Also want to stock up on cranberries and freeze them

No hash browns at the store when I went today and only a few bags of French fries. I bought a bag of potatoes, they had about a dozen of those, and I'm going to make our own hash browns.

Our Walmart has sparsely stocked shelves on canned stuff and some packaged stuff. Stocking at Albertsons looked better.

Scouted out good placement spots for above ground tannerite , viewable from my home blind, at 150-200 yards.

When we were in Walmart a week ago the shelves were very sparse in many places. There were clerks stocking shelves in most areas.

Shelves at Wally's poorly stocked here. Another oddity the last month. They are dropping some items completely. I wouldn't have noticed but 2 were Items I buy. They have been missing from shelves for just over a month. I've had to find them at other stores.

This is only in the grocery section that I have noticed and its not just one store. In both stores I go to occasionally the milk coolers have been sitting bare, only 1/3 stocked.

Our three stores have had problems: Walmart, Krogers, and Albertsons.
Going to Walmart in a minute to get grandson some dresspants. I'll check it out again.

We found a tyre repair place who has log lifters (peevie/cant hook) with post pullers on them and the guy who just took over the business wants to liquidate them at a ridiculously low price. We had stopped in there to ask about getting a new spare for the car a fortnight ago and found them.

Today we will go and buy two of them as they are like hens teeth in Australia and it will help DH and I not having to bend when cutting large logs. These are going to be well under half the price we can get them anywhere.

Good find on the peevie hooks. They can be had here but usually only from shops who build them from scratch, small welding shops/companies. They aren't mass produced here anymore.

I've seen ones made overseas that I wouldn't waste my money on.

@Peanut yes similar problem here and usually you can buy them on eBay and they are handmade usually by farmers but I couldn't find one with the body, cant hook and post puller in one. The nearest one I could find was $426.25 each, cough splutter at that price.

These were made by an older farmer who sold the tyre business to the current owner and they are sturdy as you know what. We knocked the price down even more to $170 each for buying two when we got there as they had been sitting on their shelves for 3 years and I think they only stayed there as no-one would think you could buy them from a small country town tyre repair shop of all places.

I just ordered 25 lb.s of flour.I like King Arthur. no after taste like store bought.t went up, $63.00.

King Arthur just had a bid ta-doo, a recall or something. I don't buy it so didn't commit it to memory but my mom likes it and was upset.

Looks like I'm up for a hour and a half drive to pick up 4 pullets and 5 female guinea pigs in the morning after my appointments.
I may as well do my shopping in the same town before I pick up the animals.
There are no baby chicks to be had within 2 hours drive of here.
As it is I am paying $25 each for the pullets and $18 each for the guinea pigs.
Those prices are better than the ones here on my town when the feed store has stock to sell.
Ducks are looking better and better all the time.

Ducks are easy, TankG if the prices are better. Good layers and good meat. They do like access to a wading pool. I sell unsexed chicks for $5 a piece, unless they are a special breed. Charge $15 for a young laying hen. Roosters are $5 for meat. Mean ones are free. So are small breed roosters. I have three free ones right now.

Guinea pigs will be breeding stock and I am shocked by the price as well. When I was a kid I could get guniea pigs for $5 each.

Gutted like a rabbit but the hair is plucked.
You can skin them you lose a lot fat under the skin.
I watched a YT video of a Peruvian lady in native dress plucking one and she scalded them first like a chicken before she gutted it.
The hair just wiped off with very little effort.
I wonder of that would work for rabbits.

Well, maybe. Except we usually keep the rabbit skins. It'd take a lot of guineas to make a coat. Ha. Wonder if there's a market for that?

So is there anyone else who just has grid electric for everything- heat, lights, water heater etc? If so, what are your preps? I've had other options for the past 25+ years. I don't like not having wood heat(& ability to cook on it.). We do have a trailer but. . . .

We do. The pellet stove we use for heat needs electric to start. Water heater, well water, lights etc are all electric. Thats why we have a whole house diesel generator and hundreds of gallons of treated fuel for it
I use a gas stove for cooking and I can just use a match to light the burners if I need to

We have different things stored we can use to get around the lack of electricity if we ever do need to use them
Hubby bought a military surplus multi-fuel stove years back. It burns anything. Wood, coal, gas, kerosene,etc and we can heat and cook on it if we ever need to

I just purchased a pile of polar fleece hats and gloves from a local fleet farm place. They were apparently last years stock and they wanted them gone before the new stuff went out. Paid $3 a hat and $2 per pair of gloves (all in black). I also just ordered 600 rounds of PMC Precision 150 grain SPRN. I could not stand owning a rifle and only having 40 rounds on the shelf.

I am pretty well winter prepped, just need to get my winter vehicle kits into the cars.

Made a run to sam's club this morning which will keep us for 4 months. We're all set for paper products for the winter
Sugar, salt,pepper and some spices are back up to full now in the pantry
Picked up some nuts for baking and my oatmeal.
Cleaning products are topped off


I noticed they're really pushing the instapots and air fryers ( which are just convection ovens lol)

We been using quite a lot of our great northern white beans in the last few months.

Time to replenish our storage stock.
We vac seal them in quart canning jars.

We got a Mennonite store close by that sells everything in bulk.

So blessedly happy.

I rang a bulk feed mill in a town not too far from me and had a wonderful conversation with him about buying
grains etc from him.
He's emailing me a price list for his products in 20kg bags and bulk 1 ton bulk bags.
Freight is going to cost me $55 for 6 to 25 20kg bags.
If I buy bulk bags I am going to have to organize a backhoe or a forklift to get it off the truck because it doesn't have a crane.
Hiring that sort of machine will really take the shine any cost savings from buying it in bulk and then there's the storage to keep it out of the weather and away from vermin of the 4 legged variety.
He's got hard wheat which is one grade down from prime for $16 for 20 kgs which just incredible.
Hulled oat groats, field and popping corn, mung beans.......

So excited.
