What is a processed food?

Remember, not all processed foods are alike. According to the Department of Agriculture, processed foods are any raw agricultural commodities that have been altered from their original state. That can include cutting, drying, freezing, pasteurizing or packaging.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics places these foods on a continuum, says Nancy Farrell Allen, an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics registered dietitian: Those that are minimally processed, like bagged spinach, eggs, oats, pasta and plain roasted nuts; those processed at their peak, like canned tomatoes, tuna, frozen fruit and freshly made bread; and ultra-processed foods (in which culinary ingredients or food additives are included for taste or convenience), like flavored yogurts, salad dressings, packaged crackers/cookies, chips, deli meat, soy burgers, ready-to-eat meals, frozen pizza and soft drinks. That last group is the one many doctors and researchers say you should avoid.

Keep those guidelines in mind the next time you’re at the grocery, and fill your cart with these 25 good-for-you processed foods.

This is from AARP :

Their List says 25 good-for-you, the list in that page Stops with #6 unless one is a member...!!! :waiting: :waiting: :waiting:

Ultraprocessed food is not good for you. Canning your own food is processing food, and if you used good food to can, then it's fine.
Just look at ingredients. All these chemical additives make it not food.
I was just going to look up some barbeque sauce recipes to home can because I'm tired of all the barbeque sauce out there, can't find a single one that's good. And we eat a fair amt of it.

This is a thread I’ve wanted to post for a while. Read the ingredients on any processed food. Can you even pronounce it? Do you know what it is and where it comes from? What are we actually eating in processed foods? Cereals, crackers, salad dressing, ice cream, ready to heat and eat foods are some of the suspects. I’m as guilty as anyone in buying and eating processed foods, especially after a busy day.

It's something I try to pay attention to. And still have questions. So raw milk where I live is easy to buy and not expensive, I've got a few places to get it when I want it. But little granddaughter is slightly milk intolerant, and raw bugs her, so does red cap jug milk from the store. So I've been buying Simply Nature Organic Whole Milk Vitamin D with DHA Omega 3 for her. Pricey...1/2 gal is about $4 something. But the date on it is a month or more out for goodness. So it is ultraprocessed. On the label it says, no artificial ingredients or preservatives and just contains milk. When son's expecting gf came to visit at Christmas time, she drank that, said no raw milk while she's pregnant. And she loved it, drank 2 big glasses a day (with homemade cookies, of course! ha). So is this a better product? What milk is used to make butter out of? I know I make some butter out of raw milk, too. Have a bunch in the freezer.

I would think that cream from raw milk would be better. I think when we would make butter at school, passing a jar around so everyone could get to shake it a little, we only had access to homogenized cream. I think, but I could be wrong about that.

anything you do to something is a process puts it into that category....a biggie item...grinding wheat for flour....or barley...etc. etc. heck grinding meat too.

if you try to stay away from chemicals in food well most younger folks call it eating 'clean'..not biblically clean though..but i found since that has become a thing many items are dropping chemical additives and surprisingly these people dont eat pork much so often pork by products have been taken out as well.

We would do that, too with the preschoolers, have them pass a jar all day. They loved that.
Anyone try the A2 milk from Braums? I know it's processed

i know you are going to know what i am talking about...butter....the real butter you get thats got a soury stronger taste.....its made from bad milk or milk that sets right or is butter made and then develops is taste. my local amish had it years ago...they still sell or give away real butter..but the amish folks knew exactly what i was talking and said they didnt offer it to public but would to me since i knew what it was...they kept it at their house.

Yep, and I like pork a whole lot. Wondering how much it was taboo in the middle east because it didn't get cold enough to butcher a pig and keep it cold. Biblically clean is hard. Eliminating chemicals and colors and additives and eating healthy raised food is a good start tho.

I’ve known a few people who refuse to eat pork. I grew up eating pork that was raised by my grandparents on their ranch. How can you refuse to eat bacon?

Two yrs ago I saw at our little farmer's mkt, an amish lady with a small ice chest selling small rolls of butter from raw milk, but not this year. And I haven't seen any for sale at the farm "mud rooms" where you could go in and buy (eggs, milk) and put your $$ in the jar, help yourself thing. But talking to a guy down the road, the one that did our handyman work last year, he has that setup, and has a dairy, but says his wife sells cheese curds, too, (which I love) but only in the winter and early spring because of the temps.

well god said dont eat it so they really didnt eat pork at all....on side note...archeologists can tell israel villages from others by items they dig up...no pig bones...they found old original sacrifice site when joshua and caleb first led them into the land...1000's of bones in burn pit and nothing but 'clean' critters there.

but do yo know the stronger tasting butter i am talking about?

The way they're describing it here almost sounds like the Keto diet. I would think no junk. I like my sweets, too, actually a whole lot. But I justify eating them by making them myself using good cane sugar. I know, sugar is probably not good, but oh well. At least it's not a hostess chemical mess. And I like dairy, too. Probably the junk I buy most at the store is ice cream, but try to buy a better brand. I can make it, just don't find the time often. I have a real good ice cream maker.

i have not eaten any pork or by products...knowingly...in 13 years plus.

many manufacturers are removing pork from products...they even ad it to velvetta cheese....often it was in form of gelatin..but its slowly being done away with too.

the list was huge 13 years ago...much smaller now.

What are Preservatives: Uses, Benefits, and Risks

By Culinary Craft October 23, 2024Updated:October 23, 2024

Preservatives are substances added to food products to extend their shelf life and prevent spoilage caused by microorganisms, oxidation, or other chemical changes. These additives play a crucial role in maintaining food safety, quality, and freshness over extended periods. Preservatives can be natural or synthetic compounds that inhibit the growth of bacteria, molds, and yeasts, slow down enzymatic reactions, or prevent oxidation. Common preservatives include salt, sugar, vinegar, and artificial additives like sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. While preservatives are essential for food safety and reducing food waste, there has been a growing consumer demand for “clean label” products with fewer artificial additives. This trend has led to increased research into natural preservatives and alternative food preservation methods to meet consumer preferences for healthier and more natural food options.

Types of Preservatives

Preservatives are essential in extending the shelf life of food products by preventing spoilage and maintaining quality. They can be categorized into various types based on their function and origin. Below is a list of the main types of preservatives used in the food industry:

To Many to list so here the list can 🐝 seen :

I use leftover candied jalapeno juice to make bbq sauce. Nice spice to it!

Muslins also do not eat pork. I’ve discussed this In Bible studies before. It was told to me that that is Old Testament, Jewish law, and not necessary for Christians to follow. There is a term for it that escapes me now.

it actually was from the start..hence why there was distinctions of animals on the ark...clean and unclean..clean were 7 pairs each.

its gods laws...his torah he gave to moses...often called moses law but wrongly done so...it was on the tablets given...there were not just 10 laws/commandments but tablet was covered front and back.

but anyhow...back to processed food...hope i didnt derail thread to bad yall.
