Billy this has been going on before syria! This has more to do with the Ukraine russian war and our missile defense posturing in and around the Baltics than it does with syria, syria is an excuse (a pawn) to further putin conflicts in the Baltics, putin objects to any past soviet states joining NATO including Countries like Finland and Sweden, Finland and Sweden even talking of joining the Alliance gets putin feathers all ruffled up, just look at his past threats This shxt is Cold War 101

A lot of this would just be alleviated if we pulled out of Syria, left ISIS for Russia to deal with, and let Russia have its damn pipeline there. Our support for those rebels (half of which are ISIS sympathizers, or even soldiers with them too!) is only due to the fact that it keeps that pipeline from going through. In the meantime, the presence of ISIS was scaring those neighboring nations into sitting on the sidelines. So, we (and the Russians) take pot shots at them instead of cleaning house. But, if Russia got its way, it'd wipe them out in a heartbeat

Finland to the 700 million people of the EUssr is just a few million people and a lot of trees and iron ore that is in some politicians minds actually on Russian territory. The EU WILL shaft the Finns of that I am 100% certain, just as they would cede Iceland, Greenland, Cyprus, Malta or any other small countries in order to avoid a full on war. You have to remember and this is important but many of todays EU politicians are former soviet union politicians.

Jonnte if your people trust the EU with your protection I suggest you go and buy some tubes of Vaseline because your ass is going to need it.

Though today Finland isn't as neutral as it was during the Cold War, I believe that's why we having been sending troops into Finland for winter training not just for winter experience since we could have and less costly have sent our troops to Alaska. This has more to do with terrain training, alliance building and calming of nerves and in the process (US view) piss putin off Hopefully neither one of our points would ever be tested.

Kind of a puzzling move.

Hillary shows no signs of cracking down on Putin in the Baltics...or in Syria.

Trump would be content to let Putin have his pipeline in Syria (and allow Putin to crush ISIS for us in the process). Can't recall him ever being hard-assed on the Baltics either.

So, I'm not really sure where Putin is coming from with all of the war preps. Hillary will let him roll over us and our allies...and Trump is willing to wheel and deal with him. Go figure.

The only thing that makes sense, is this is posturing for a more favorable deal in the Baltics. By being ready for war, he shows he's serious, so when he comes to the table, the international community may make more concessions to not risk a conflict.
