In memory of Vasily Bugrov

Siege of Leningrad, 872 days of hell. A day like an endless nightmare. Nights filled with hunger and the sounds of air raid sirens - the sound that eats into your ears forever and make your blood run cold in your veins.

Wrapped in a sheepskin coat, the girl Masha ran into the house, shaking a skinny red cat in front of her.
- Moooom! Vaska caught a rat!
- Oh, what a fine fellow, our breadwinner! Give her here, let's cook.

There really was a strangled rat dangling from Vasily's teeth. Natalya, without any disgust, freed the cat from this burden and turned the prey over in her dry hands, disfigured by hard work.

- Good, fat. The goulash will be excellent. Oh, Vaska, we would be lost without you! - she turned to the cat and stroked his bony back, - my golden one, my golden one!

Vasily jumped on the bench. His yellow-green eyes matched the most ordinary wild, reddish colour. Once he had a muzzle and looked important, but that was a long time ago, before the blockade. Now everyone who lives in this house resembles walking dead. All who are left are his mother, the girl and the cat.

Masha woke up in a sweat, shouting: "Mom, run, there's an alarm!", but Mom answered her: "Daughter, you were dreaming, go back to sleep." But the sound was so clear, so loud, that Masha listened for a long time and hugged the cat tighter.

Will this hell ever end? Year after year, day after day... Hunger. Fear. And bombs. Here it is, a childhood without colours, life in the blackest tones.

If it weren't for Vaska, Masha and her mother would have been starving long ago. Every morning he went hunting and brought back mice or even, like yesterday, a well-fed rat. Mice were turned into soup, rats into goulash.

Vaska never ate his prey on the sly - he sat and waited for his portion. The best portion. Natalya always gave him the best piece, because he was the breadwinner, the provider, because he was their main hero.

At night, the three of them slept: Natalya with her daughter on either side of Vaska, warming them with his body heat.

Vasily felt that there would be a bombing long before it started.
- Masha, look! Vaska is worried, quickly grab your things and let's run!
Vasily was spinning around near the door and meowing pitifully.

Natalya grabbed the most essential; water, the girl Masha and the cat, and rushed headlong to the bomb shelter. Along the way, she took the utmost care of Vaska - so that, God forbid, he would not be taken and eaten.

The feeling of hunger was permanent, could not be turned off. The most excruciating moment was when the pitiful ration was terrifyingly quickly approaching the end.

Crumbs for the birds. Natalya collected each of them and kept them like pearls. They would come in handy in the spring, when the birds returned to their land. Having scattered them in a suitable place, Natalya hid in ambush with Vaska. Vasily's jump was always accurate.

There! The bird in his teeth, but he was unable to hold it for long, because, like everyone else, he was very weak and thin. At that moment, Natalya came to his aid. So, from spring until autumn, in addition to rats and mice, birds added variety to their diet.

After the blockade was lifted, when there was more food, and then when the war finally ended, Natalya always gave Vaska the best piece from the table and said: "Eat, eat, Vasenka! You are our breadwinner!"

Vaska the cat passed away in 1949. Natalya quietly buried him in the cemetery and, so that the place would not be trampled, put up a cross with the inscription «Vasily Bugrov».

Because he was not 'just a cat', but a real member of the family. Because they would have been long gone if not for this fluffy one with a wild red colour and sideburns on his cheeks.

Later, Natalya herself lay down next to Vasily, and then Mashenka was laid next to them.

So they all lie together, side by side, as in the terrible, endless days of the blockade, and dear Vasenka warms them with his love.

Going to tell yall about a German Shepard named Orient and man named Bill Irwin.

Bill was fully blind and he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail with Orient. He did have a few folks come out and hike sections with him for a day or three...but he done it mostly alone with Orient. At times he lost the trail and wandered around lost till finding the trail at first. Then Orient started keeping him on trail or got him on trail when off it and Orient figured out to take Bill to sign posts so Bill could read them...how does a blind man read you ask...braille of course...see the old original signs marking directions and names of places an miles were made with pride and craftsmanship and the time was taken to actually route the lettering and numbers in the wood before painting. If a sign is just painted you cant read them after time. These sign were built to last...sadly i am seeing more of these signs age out and i just hope we as a nation can keep replacing them as time goes on for all to see and enjoy for years to come.

Bill wrote a book titled "Blind Courage" i have a copy i bought the year it came out.

Sadly Bill passed away in 2014

It's amazing how different species can interact and communicate!! Be it people and animals, or different species of animals!! I remember reading a story about a goat that helped a blind horse. They were pasture buddies, the goat made sure the horse got to the water trough and hay! Really incredible! This is a great thread, I hope many can contribute to it!! I also hope the negative nellies will keep their ill will to themselves!!😉

Wherever you go, there are negative people. There is a man who I have seen at one of the dog parks who has problems with many people. He is just another miserable person sharing his negativity with others. Be glad we are not one of them!
Love the stories about how animals and people can live together in harmony. So many animals are loving and kind. So often their love is unconditional. We can’t say that about all humans.
I have been so fortunate to meet and spend time with many great dogs. So many remember me and that I talk to them and pet and scratch their backs. They are so much more enjoyable to hang out with than some people.

I remember your story about Aries (?, the dog hit by a car) and how looked at you!! Have you ever gotten to see him again??

I remember your story about Aries (?, the dog hit by a car) and how looked at you!! Have you ever gotten to see him again??
I have not seen dear Aries since I saw him walking with his owner. There is an example of pure love from an animal. He escaped his yard by jumping a fence, was hit by a vehicle, lay in the street in a puddle of blood as large as him. I was sure he was deceased until I started talking to the woman who had probably hit him and had been on the phone to 911. It was a busy street, 4 lanes, and I was on the opposite side. When I heard her say, “I’ll hold,” I asked her if the dog had tags. He lifted his head and started talking to me, not crying or in a way that indicated that he was in pain. Just then the owner comes out, scooped him up, and said, “How did you get out?” That was in January and months later I saw a woman and dog walking and it looked like him, a spaniel. I rolled down my window and asked if he had been hit by a car? Yes, in January. I pulled over and sat on a ledge and talked to her. He came and leaned on me and of course I pet him and talked to him. He had gotten a broken leg and almost bit his tongue off, which was the cause of all the blood. Now I see a spaniel and think of sweet Aries.

Aries brought my attention to spaniels. I hadn’t really tuned into them. Now I see spaniels and I want to know them and about each of them. I have met another spaniel at one of the parks, but I haven’t seen him very often. I don’t even remember his name right now. I was visiting with his owner. I thought that spaniels were hunting dogs and said that to his owner. She confirmed that they are used for hunting and that they have taken their dog hunting. That was the perfect segue about gun ownership and knowing about guns. I told her about Armed Women of America and the closest chapter to us. I haven’t seen her at any meetings yet.

Cat Rescues: The Kitten That Was Found In A Pile Of Trash

A small kitten was found in the trash at a grocery store and that prompted a flurry of posts about his care. His eyes and nose were stuck shut with mucus, so he couldn’t see or smell food.

Suggestions were made to put honey on his gums, slurry food, and get to a veterinarian as soon as possible—which isn’t always possible.

A hot water bottle, carefully covered so it wasn’t too warm, chicken broth, Nutrical, antibiotics and hundreds of thoughts and prayers finally helped this little guy turn the corner. Look what a beauty he turned out to be -
