We never had phone books in our out house (Jones house) when I was a kid, we always had t.p. I did read that if you ever get to the point that you are using a page or two out of the phone book, you want to soften it up. You can do that by crumpling it up, flattening it out, and re-crumpling it again, a few times. The more times you do it, the softer it will get.

With 10 kids sometimes you ran out of tissue. And it sure beat pine cones. :eyeballs:

I went to the extreme of calculating toilet paper use in my household for a set period of time, and then figured out how much we would need for a year- and then multiplied that by..... well, let's just say I do not see us running out of TP for the foreseeable future! My husband thinks I am nuts, but I do NOT want to have to rely on phone books, leaves or anything other than nice soft TP on my tender old butt!

I monitored t.p. use as well and figured out how much was being used. We have a good supply as well.

:D Can't say I blame you for that.

Weedy Sweety I know it will be missed when its gone, but it is not worth the storage space for us. Plus we do have some stored. And hopefully we will not need the phone books. But to be on the safe side we got em. .

growing up near the swamps of Florida we had wood stove ,hand pump water and a outhouse down by the garden and we didn't always have toilet paper but we did have catalogues .they worked and just recently I put a composting outhouse by the back of my garden and I have both toilet paper and a huge stack of phone books -nice thin paper-if I should run out of the first one

I stock a ton. I do not consider toilet paper a luxury item. The romans and greeks used a sponge on a stick and a lot of the world still uses the washable left hand method. Wonder if you can encourage growth of spanish moss on trees in your yard for a renewable source? Just make sure it isnt full of chiggers. Heard about using mullein and catalpa as well. I might buy more tp at costco this week :).

I bet some of those were Sear and Roebuck , JCPenny , Montgomery Ward catalogs? Some had slick pages in them which were hard to soften though. I think the phone books will be a much better remedy.

If we are growing food we might as well grow tp as well. If growing spanish moss I wonder if you can cut off the daily amount and soak it in water with a little tea tree oil to make sure its bug free before it meets sensitive parts of your anatomy. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion but thats the first thing that came to mind. A quick google search showed me it isnt too hard to start spanish moss on trees if you are at the right climate. Looking to see how fast it grows and cant find anything definitive.

I really like the idea of growing a TP substitute but I don't think Spanish moss is going to do to well in my neck of the desert. Great concept.

We are loaded with the stuff down here. Butt just the thought of chiggers is painful! We use finger nail polish to smother those little devils. Chiggers are right up there with fire ants.
I can't imagine finger nail polish cure in that area of the anatomy.

Yes, a way to make sure it is clean and bug free is a must! Chiggers are bad enough in less sensitive areas!! Can be grown indoors though. That might help.

"
That could certainly give the term having a RED azz" a whole new meaning.

We did some clearing a few years back and hubby got into a nest of them. We tried everything including Ben Gay, BAD MISTAKE! Now only was he still horribly itching but on fire too. Finally went and got chigger meds and finger nail polish.

As someone who was dicing jalapeño peppers and had to take a bowel movement, I can attest that even with washing hands before hand and through toilet paper, jalapeño juice in the rectal area brings tears to the eyes and one shouldn’t try to wipe those tears away. Just saying ... drawn your own pictures

and OUCH!!!!

I just got a couple of cases online to add to my supply, but am thinking now maybe it ain't enough! LOL! I do have clean rags cut up and stored as well as they have more uses than just for TP.

I do have my Spider Man comic book collection.....several boxes.....but things would have to get REALLY bad for me to even think of using those!

I will attest to a similar excruciating painful experience to @BugoutBob but with Dencorub. I put the cream on DH's back carefully and I thought thoroughly washed my hands and went to the rest room. I can quite honestly say you cannot successfully wash Dencorub off your hands to sufficiently go to the toilet afterwards without posing a substantial risk to your nether regions  .

Oh. My heart goes out to you but thanks for letting me know it isn’t just me

There are some hilarious posts here!

Jalapenos? I had them burning my hands for days once. I can't imagine getting that burn in my privates.

I have had chigger bites a couple times, but one time was bad.

Gee, I don't know a lot about plants, but these look like nice soft leaves that could be used as a substitute for TP.....
