Been unhappy with my Maytag washer and dryer set since purchase 5 years ago and am looking to replace them with an all in one, Curious to know if anyone has bought an all-in-one washer/dryer combo (same size as a single washer or dryer unit) and what you think about them. Looks to me to be a way to cut space by about half. Some don't even need a vent hookup to dry, which is great since my contractor couldn't seem to get vent outlet placement right when he built the house (it puts the dryer out in front of the utility room's 3x5 window...)

I've had a top end GE all in one stacked. no problems. it was about $1350.00
I've also been curious about the one machine washer/dryers. I know they are more common in other countries.
If by "all-in-one" you mean a single device that, does it all inside of one cylinder (NOT a stacked dryer over a washer) then maybe read a bunch of reviews (starting with the 1 out of 5 reviews)
I know a doctor with a small clinic who thought she would be saving time by not having to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer and also not having to vent it meant she could locate it in the heart of the clinic. No need for a vent pipe. She returned it a week later. It washed great and fast, but the drying part was crazy, like 4 or 5 hours! So, if it's this machine or one like it, she would definitely recommend against it.
If by all-in-one you meant the kind with the dryer attached to the top of a washer (stacked,) yeah, they work OK, they're just usually of lower capacity than the standalone models. They're great space savers. But ANY model that doesn't have a vent will probably have the same LONG drying times the "combo" unit I mentioned above has.

Then again I have been without a dryer for a very long time. And I also have chemical sensitivities that prevent me from using anything scented. But now you've got me wondering about a fellow I was standing behind in line at the store....
I've been curious about the all-in-ones, just in thinking about making more usable space in my utility room. But when I look at them in the store, they're not only very expensive, but seem to be awkward. I would either be cracking my head on the dryer fetching the socks out of the bottom of the washer, or unable to reach the socks on the back of the dryer. I played around with some display models and realized it just wouldn't be worth it.

I'm bad about leaving clothes in the dryer, I wouldn't do well with an all in one! Sounds like a waste of electricity to me if they take 3-6 hours to get the job done! I can see the up side, saving space. Most everything I wash I hang out. Sometimes I dry socks, underwear and such. I want the option of drying what I want to dry. I didn't even know they made an all in one!!
I'd have to ask a lot of questions before thinking of getting a combo washer/dryer. Back in the 1960's I helped move a combo that I said I never, ever wanted to do again, that dang thing weighed around 500 pounds and I'm not sure that the newer ones would be any lighter. We are very happy with our Whirlpool washer and dryer, they are front loaders, the last top load washer we had we go in 1974 and it lasted to 2008, the dryer we bought in 1974 and it was still running good when we gave it away. I know that combo washer/dryers sound like a good idea for space saving but I'd rather have them separately, to me, they would be easier to work on, just too much stuff in one container in a combo.

We have had a GE also for about 4 years. No problems. The washer is top load. It isn't overly heavy and my wife loves it. One thing to keep in mind is if just one thing is irreparable then you are kinda stuck.
