was listening to a guy talk yesterday and used a term in a way i never heard before. he says niche survival skills...he used it in the way to represent skills used in a certain area or region....and how some skills are basic while many are not. he showed how when region experts often indigenous are sought out for information to regions and areas and how even in far north type survival across the planet and theres a wide variance of skills even though its same cold north country around arctic circle line.

i have a very old book about people of the north across the globe from way back and it filled with pictures of all kinds of things each done to survive.its very interesting.

i do know this to be true because i promise you if you live in southeast..you will want to figure out a way to have fans..be it ceiling fans, box fan or small 12volt oscillating fans you often see. in a survival thing you wont be out in noon day sun pushing yourself and especially not if you have no fan or power to an a/c...you will go back to old work schedules of getting up early before daylight and getting ready and be out doing stuff till about 10am as it gets hot and then returning to house or shade till late afternoon and going till dark or just after dark...i promise you that...and especially true if you are older....the heat and humidity will kill you...even more so being older.

another thing is i mentioned in old book i have it says all hardwoods and grapevines are good for smoking...well thats true..but its north america its talking about...as example....theres a tree and i dont know name have to do research..but its in africa...if you cook over it you are probably dead..its highly toxic.

drying food stuff...you wont do that in humid south either...its going to draw moisture...i have tried hanging string of peppers up like they do in southwest...they mold and rot.....something else i tried and forget what it was same results...you need to use a dehydrator and put it in sealed jars afterwards in my experiences in high humidity.

just a ramble

Very good post Elk!! As far as short term weather prepping ( ice storms, summer t-storms, etc.), prepping can be very area specific! Battery operated and/or rechargeable fans are a must in the summer here, along with the generator to keep fridges and freezers going. Firewood a must in the winter here. Since this thread is about prepping and not wilderness survival, I won't get into finding/knowing where the water is, or finding/catching food!

Interesting.......Very interesting. Where in this thread was that born......???

Preppers think they get to "CHOSE" what pieces or parts of prepping is fun or easy or they can rationalize (to themselves) is relevant.

Death or physical injury does not care, if a prepper goes a'-la carte, picks and chose from the prepping menu.

Events that qualify at differing levels as SHTF, those events don't CARE. They are a delivery service for death, injury, misery or horrific hardship.

look at one event grizzgal went through...getting bit by the rattler...she suffered and dang near lost her leg from hip down...looking back she said she didnt see it and it was beside her while putting up no trespassing signs...when she squatted down it bit her in side of leg....going on a very old memory..i think it hit her twice or more...thinking back i gotta believe at that time was start of her eyesight issues and makes me wonder if thats why it happened...a solution to that could be a pair or three of jagdterrier, jack russells etc. type little dogs that just hunt and kill everything...they might have seen snake and allerted her of it or been engaging it before she got to that point..you know how dogs often range out in front of us hunting up stuff...dogs aint fool proof...they just might be an added edge.

as i get older i will have a pack of jagdterriers.
