Rodney Atkins - If You're Going Through Hell

Well you know those times when you feel like there's a sign there on your back
That says I don't mind if you kick me, seems like everybody has
Things go from bad to worse you think they can't get worse than that and then they do

You step off the straight and narrow and you don't know where you are
Used the needle of your compass to sew up your broken heart
Ask directions from a genie in a bottle of Jim Beam
And she lies to you
That's when you'll learn the truth

[Chorus]
If you're goin' through hell keep on going
Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there

I've been deep down in that darkness
I've been down to my last match
Felt a hundred different demons breathin' fire down my back
And I knew that if I stumbled I'd fall right into the trap
That they were layin', yeah

But the good news is there's angels everywhere out on the street
Holdin' out a hand to pull you back up on your feet
The one's that you've been draggin' for so long
You're on your knees you might as well be prayin'
Guess what I'm sayin'

[Chorus]
If you're goin' through hell keep on going
Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there
Yeah, if you're goin' through hell keep on movin'
Face that fire, walk right through it
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there

@Peanut I’ll assume you’ve already heard this but just in case. . . Hubby pulled it up and listened last night. It’s a 2 hr concert but if anyone likes pickin’ and sungin’ give the first song or two a listen. Incredible talent!

I don't know how I missed this. It is sad, but part of life. :(
I could never have survived my first divorce without him.
Had been convinced that I was a total failure and gave my shotgun to my mom telling her that I would off myself with it, if I had it.
Sitting in my lonely house, totally depressed, I put on my huge Radio Shack headphones, put on Phil's LP, cranked the volume all the way up and played this song until my ears bled:

It was a lifesaver!:)

I bought 2 cds by Billy Strings last month. The one titled “Dad and Me” has great picking music. It’s filled with old songs I grew up picking. Great pickers too, Ron n Rob McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Micheal Cleveland.

The other cd, “Home”, is much different. Basically a peek into Billy’s head, he wrote every song on it. The music is highly technical and complex. It’s not exactly bluegrass but done with bluegrass instruments. Molly Tuttle does some vocals, Douglas plays too. Not for everyone but I like it, some great guitar playing.

Here’s one from dad n me, Way Down Town. I played it many times as a teen. The memory of the old guy who used to sing it brings a smile.

Caught a few minutes of a show that used to be on called the 'Wonder Years' and the soundtrack bought me back. Found it on Spotify. Joan Baez, Joe Cocker etc

Funny, I never saw the show but remember it for a very different reason. I worked nights in LA. There was an all night diner by my house. I ate there occasionally, had great chili. They sometimes filmed episodes of the "wonder years" at that diner, used to be an old train station.

I couldn't get a late dinner when they were filming, used to annoy me to no end!!! It never failed, if I were tired and hungry... they were filming!!!!

I love it!

My 'Angel Of The Morning'---a $4 plunger from WallyWorld that helped clear a sink clog, my old plunger was so old that the rubber had dry rotted in the desert and cracked when I tried to use it. Meh, got a new one now... haven't used a plunger in years, but it's good to have one handy just in case. I was gonna loosen and empty the trap, but someone glued one side of the 'J'---so no dice, and I didn't wanna get into a big ol' plumbing project, aye? 😒

Here's the soundtrack for clearing the clog...

Juice Newton

Since I was slumming around with the plumbing, I might as well throw in the ghetto version... ;)

Land of Confusion - Genesis

Ah, so I'm not the only one that likes Phil Collins.
That song should be the theme-song for 2022:(.

Been thinking of my visit to London in 1979, when my eldest brother was still alive and I needed a place to regroup after some hard times... punk rock was going off (most notably the Pistols), and some New Wave bands were kicking out hits like this one, which I dug at the time. I'm not some huge Blondie fan, usually when I hear the name Blondie, I think of friggin' Tuco hollerin' at the end of 'THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY'---"HEY, BLONDIE, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE?" That's what comes to mind when I hear the name Blondie, lol... but I like this gal too, aye? She has a few songs I like, and she certainly made a name for herself in the 'New Wave' music era... 😬

This song 'DREAMING' was a huge hit, and it really struck a chord with me, I dunno why... I was all mixed up at the time and heavily into drugs, listening to hardcore punk rock and skating with my friends back on 'The Rock' (Coronado, CA). I went to England by invitation, my eldest brother doing his best to get me away from the drug scene at home... and I saw some really cool $h!t during my visit, lol. Rode a 4-speed N-V-T moped (Norton-Villiers-Triumph) and explored the area where my brother lived (Dulwich, not far from Forest Hill). Drank ale in pubs, and skated the 'Mad Dog Bowl' on the Old Kent Road... met three black skaters there who ripped, and they all spoke with a British accent, lol.

I should add that during that era, there were only 3 main channels on British TV, and one of 'em (don't ask me which) hosted a show called 'TOP OF THE POPS'---while watching that show one night, I saw the Pistols hit the top of the charts with their version of 'MY WAY' (an awesome tune). I always liked the Sinatra version of that tune, but the Pistols version wasn't bad either, lol. Those pesky goldurned punk rockers... Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten et al, they really made their mark in music history, that's for sure. But I also liked Blondie, she did her part to bring a "New Wave" of consciousness to listeners worldwide. Cute in her own way too... a little too "clubbish" for me in my callow youth, lol.

Here we go with two videos, one of Blondie singing 'DREAMING' and one of the Pistols doing 'MY WAY'---a couple of songs which affected me at the time when I was filled with teenage angst, lol. Let's relive that era for a moment! 😎

Blondie

Pistols

Here's the only link I found with pics of the 'Mad Dog Bowl' on Old Kent Road in London... an indoor skatepark which I frequented while I spent two months in London. Of the three black guys who skated and also worked there, Winston told me that when Tony Alva visited the park back in the day, he took one look at the kinked halfpipe and walked on by to the mushy 13' pool, lol. Guess he didn't wanna test his luck in that halfpipe... that was a challenging halfpipe to ride, with huge 'soup bowl' kinks in the concrete, lol. Black rider Clifton pulled some serious 'double grinds' in the last part of the snake run, where a vertical concrete extension took the bowl to new heights, lol. Clifton was quiet but he ripped, lol... 😲

Well, this is what I did this past winter… I have about 400 songs in my picking folders that I play along with. Takes a couple weeks to play all of them. I didn’t play for 6yrs, started again this past labor day. Sort of a thing with me, sometimes circumstance, sometimes choice, I don’t play for a few years, happened several times in my life. I should be asked, how many times did you learn to play? Not, when did you learn to play…

Sometimes it was for just a year… any more than a few months and I had to start from scratch. Starting again wasn’t difficult when I was young, a few weeks. This time was tough, took months to get my old hands to cooperate.

Speaking of which, here is a minute of them not cooperating. Unedited, mistakes and all, 17 of them, a mistake about every 3 seconds. This is an old song, made famous by “Asleep at the Wheel”. A little texas swing done by the bluegrass band, 3rd Tyme Out. I’ve posted it in this thread before, “Miles of Texas”.

I tried to figure a way to record with my phone from a tripod for the folk school. I’ve since learned this can be an effective learning tool. If I’m having difficulty with part of a song I can send the video to other pickers, looking for suggestions. Plus I can see a close up of their hands when they send a video back. My picking is much better when playing with other people. Video can be a substitute from time to time.

Again, here am I, mistakes and all… also, the version without me...

I play the most boring stuff in the world, rhythm, but I enjoy it. The purpose of the picking classes was to add a little more variety. While playing rhythm I normally add harmony notes, baritone and bass. I'd like to add more. No one plays rhythm anymore, you can buy canned bass even drums. I guess the music left me behind... meh, I'll keep doing what I do. Only a few more years and arthritis will take that... so until then...
