you know if I put in a bunker I don't want anyone to know where it is,and building a bunker in LA is public record,,,here if you want a bunker you buy it,they come and dig the hole and then deliver and install it,damned few people even see it come into the area, and it is in the ground the same day it is delivered,,,,,no permit no inspection boom done

Good point, I saw an article where three or four families moved to Arkansas to live because they wanted privacy, off grid living, access to open cast drift coal and to build survival retreats, they chose arkansas because it did not have the intrusive public authorities that some other eastern states has.

Over here planning permissions are required for just about everything, so everyone and their dog knows if you are building a bunker. This leads to the wealthy asking for extensive cellars often called ICEBERG HOMES as there is more underground than above. people of more modest means often buy older larger Victorian and Edwardian properties that were built with very large cellars and they have them modified / re -enforced / upgraded on the QT.

Mel brooks said "it's good to be king". I say "it would be good to be rich". If I had the resources I would build a self sustaining community. I don't care about a hi end luxury bunker, but would like a secure community where everyone worked as a whole, including medical, trades, energy generation, etc. something out in the middle of nowhere, as self sustaining as possible.

I hear there's an island in Scotland for sale....

I don't need a group of people to have to worry about,,,I will go it alone,,me and the dog will be fine,,,,like old Hank says,,,,A SHOTGUN A RIFLE AND A 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND COUNTRY BOY CAN SURVIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one person is an expert at everything. Not to mention, nice to have someone care for you while sick or injured, etc. Likewise, nice to have someone on guard while you sleep.

Agreed. I'd like to find a couple people to join us, but don't know how to locate the right person or persons. My kids have no interest in coming here. I even tried to entice (bribe?) them with free land (100 acres each) and equipment.

kids these days..go figure..LOL

Yep, mine are the same way.

Too boring out here, they say. What they really mean, is because they were too lazy to learn to drive (even had a buddy that was letting them use his car, and willing to teach them...I get home too late)...but nope. So, they can't balance country life with city fun, because they can't get anywhere. Damn, make friends that HAVE CARS....I don't know...

They live with us though, just that when we go, they'll just sell it, rather than take advantage of it. I would prefer one of them at least actually live in it....but then, guess we won't be around to care.

I'm half toying with the idea of later on, doing a reverse mortgage on it, and live off that some...lol. No sense killing ourselves if they don't appreciate it anyhow....

I kind of like the reverse mortgage idea. If my kids or grandkids aren't interested then I'm thinking of leaving my place to one of my former employees. With the stipulation that she never sells or divides the land. Of course I'd leave her enough cash to cover all taxes and expenses for life. We have a cemetery on the property and my wife and I plan to be buried here.

So it transpires the rich and powerful are not only building or buying bunkers and retreats but ever more of them are permenantly relocating AWAY from cities.

SOME are moving to other cities but it appears many are not.

Millionaires are leaving Chicago more than any other city in the United States on a net basis, according to a new report. About 3,000 individuals with net assets of $1 million or more, not including their primary residence, moved from the city last year, with many citing rising racial tensions and worries about crime as factors in the decision, according to research firm New World Wealth. That represented about 2 percent of the city's high net worth individuals.
Cities in the United States that saw a net inflow of millionaires included Seattle and San Francisco.
Chicago was among four cities worldwide with the biggest flight of millionaires.
The French city lost 7,000, or 6 percent, of its millionaires, followed by Rome, which lost 5,000, or 7 percent.
Chicago was next, followed by Athens.
Most of the millionaires who left Paris and Rome fled their countries, while Chicagoans moved elsewhere in the United States, said New World Wealth, whose data is used by luxury-goods companies, private banks and real estate professionals, among others.
Findings of the New World Wealth report are consistent with a Nielsen study released late last year that showed Chicago is losing large numbers of affluent African-Americans.
The Nielsen report found that the Chicago area has fallen out of the top echelon of U.S. cities when it comes to the percentage of black households earning more than $100,000. In 2000, Chicago ranked seventh among the cities with the largest percentage of black households with income at that level or higher, but in 2015, Chicago had dropped out of the top 10.
In the New World Wealth report, the country with the biggest net outflow of millionaires was France, with 10,000. It was followed by China, Italy, India and Greece.
The countries with the biggest net inflows of millionaires were Australia, the United States, Canada, Israel, United Arab Emirates and New Zealand.
Sources for the millionaire-migration study, the third done by New World Wealth, include: interviews with about 800 millionaires a year; interviews with migration experts, wealth managers and property agents; property sales records; and tracking of millionaire movements in the media.
Numbers are rounded to the nearest 1,000.

i'm not too bothered what "the rich" do, their money wont do them any good POST SHTF, they just become yet another person with no skills.
that may be true but if they aren't stupid they have the funds to setup a pretty good shelter setup, that will give them a edge over most people in this country,,,,,,,with $350k I could set it up and live in the bunker in comfort for 2 or 3 years and come back out after all the riff raft has been stomped out

then what? with nobody around to be their flunkies and to do all the work for them they would just be delaying the inevitable.

I could be wrong but some of them will be ok,if they were wise enough to build a shelter to survive, they probably have at least researched what they need to know after the big bang

In the interest of full disclosure we are selling a substantial shelter in Kansas. Not the one you have seen on TV, but the same basic structure, but for considerably less money.
It is being readied for final build out by the next owner with all necessary subsystems being fitted out now. We already have one fitted out, and don't need 2.

That said, I agree, that at least you have the option to ride it out, all things being equal. You can then pop up fully or in increments when the situation normalizes to the new long-term reality. Without a secured physical shelter, you would need a lot more security personnel, planning and equipment to protect what you want to protect for any extended time. Since there seems to generally be a high level of distrust among preppers, this might be the most practical solution rather than counting on your friends to drop everything and magically come to your aid and form a MAG around you.

At least if you have a sturdy shelter, you are in a good trading position to get others to join you, as you have something unique and valuable to offer. As to everyone knowing where certain shelters are located, there is not much that cannot be determined with a little research by someone intent on finding information. Not to say that anything made by man cannot be overcome by man - but, will the right people show up with the right equipment, and remain unopposed long enough to breach the shelter? A sturdy structure with appropriate concealed fighting positions and layered defenses could bedevil even the more determined adversary.

I also resist the assumption that because someone has paid close attention to the financial side of their affairs and accumulated some monetary excess, that they automatically lack skills in other areas. I can and do weld, build, plumb, pull electric, drive, mechanic, can, cook, build fires, camp, hunt, swim, hike, climb and rappel, shoot, provide medical care, innovate... and invest my money wisely.

That depends on location ;) I always felt better amongst the trees than be confined in a fortified coffin under someone else's security protocols then add the 'stranger impact' amongst the group. Trust is instrumental to any group!

i'd rather be above ground where I can see what is going on and who is about, than in some underground bunker wondering what the hell is going on above.
you are so right about trust, post shtf stranger=danger!!
