I'll take my chances above ground. I feel pretty safe here. There are no nuke targets or nuclear facilities anywhere around here. And I don't think we're in any danger of fallout due to the prevailing winds. If I'm wrong it's too late to do anything about it now anyway. All of my focus is going towards above ground projects.

if I can get what I want built I will have 3 levels of protection bunker to survive severe radiation fallout fortified basement in case the house itself is damaged and the the house which will have 12 inch concrete and brick walls and possibly a concrete roof,,,,,,with every level connected,,,,,I think that would pretty well cover your ass,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I like my concrete

i'd rather be above ground where I can see what is going on and who is about, than in some underground bunker wondering what the hell is going on above.

Periscope??? I would say remote camera, but who knows how that will work in a SHTF situation. I have a remote camera that connects to my phone's bluetooth. Limited range, but it doesn't depend on the grid. As long as the phone and camera are charged, I can see through walls, LOL. The camera charges by USB and draws very little power, so a solar phone charger connected to the camera in a discreet location would stay in operation indefinitely.

You would need over two feet of solid concrete to protect against radiation or over 8 feet of solid wood or over 3 feet of solid earth, all entry points need to be in a series of 90 degree angles to protect against gamma. Earth is generally cheaper followed by concrete then you need to add filtration for the air this is all providing your wind pattern and distance from the blast zone.

You also need to figure out the amount of radiation outside your structure to determine the half life, so you need to know the variables thus you need reliable equipment to make readings of the outside enviroment, don't purchase the cheap crap on Amazon, I use the older Civil Defense reconditioned equipment from the early 60s, cost about $600

that is why I want the deep bunker,10 ft of soil on top with it's own air filtration

these people will come and install it for you

nothing here worth bombing! just a few cows and a few more sheep!!:pmiddle of the English countryside, prevailing wind is AWAY from my location.

I don't think anywhere will be safe from fallout ,,,fallout from the other side of the world can get to you,,,,I have never found anything on how long it would be before all fallout was gone,,,,if someone has that info I sure would like to hear it

Also keep in mind, underground bunkers especially underground canister/tube types won't offer a lot of protection against the influx of people, especially with people that have any brain at all, all that needs to be done is plug your vents and/or dig a hole down to the top of your underground bunker and fill the hole up with diesel and set it ablaze or shoot a few holes through the top then fill the hole with diesel. The shelter will protect against fallout but not people ;)

Don't forget about needing a way to store/recycle water.
A way to eliminate human waste.
A way to eliminate solid waste.
Redundant systems.
Repair tools and supplies.

An actual bomb shelter is a massive prepper undertaking, to do it right and not make it a tomb.

isn't fallout wind driven?

Too many variables such as, how much debris interred the atmosphere from a ground burst detonation , the jet stream can carry debris particles for decades, surface winds will carry ground settled particles different directions then you got to take into account seasonal wind patterns, in most cases (if far enough from the blast and wind direction) one can venture out after two weeks for a short period of time. That's why it is imperative to have a reliable geiger counter, without a geiger counter it would be difficult to determine the contamination and half life of your environment. After two weeks the radiation has reduced by 1000 (still not safe) so limit outside activity to 20 minutes, after 15 weeks about 4 hour outside exposure per day depending on the amount of radiation being detected, generally radiation will circle the earth for over 25 years but doesn't necessarily mean the ground will be contaminated for that long. Like I said, too many variables.

Paul, I don't know of any that won't break the bank that's worth a damn, many of the digital counters that sell on Amazon are not harden against EMP plus the majority won't cover all three A, B and Gamma. Most I've seen cover high readings but not low reading and the majority are made in china.
