I do some of that as well with chickens. Once in a while I buy a roasted chicken, clean the meat off of it, and put the carcass in a pot and make broth. It is beef bones that are difficult to find now. I like to use beef bones with marrow and beef knuckle bones. I think there is some good nutrition there.

Yes there is. Can you find beef shank??? That is a good piece of meat with a good marrow bone in it and tons of good old time beefy flavor but here they are very expensive. They run about $12 or $14.99lb. Oxtails are also expensive, but make some good soup

@DrJenner, is it always like that when snowstorms close the passes? Or is it that nowadays stores and institutions don't have very deep stocks to begin with, making the pass closures more problematic?
I’ve never seen it like this before. Sometimes a delivery will get missed and they will be low but this is day 4.
I feel like a terrible prepper. 😔
Guess I could go to the store to get food but would have to do it daily at 4:30 am on the way to work. I’d rather just whine about it 😜

The last 2 years we have made a lot of stock (beef and chicken) we put all the vegetables and water in a large stock pot (23 quart) and then add the whole chicken or bone in beef, cook it about half way and remove the meat, de-bone it and then put the remains back into the pot for another hour or 2. Once we finish we strain everything in the pot and put it into containers for refrigerating over night, we remove the fat that forms on the surface and then reheat the liquid and pressure can it... The wife saves the chicken fat by freezing, don't know what she does with the beef fat... We use the chicken meat to make casseroles for eating and freezing, soups, and we use the beef in tacos, burritos, chili and bbq beef sandwiches. I'm sure I missed something but I am relying on my weak memory.

Oh, when we do chicken we do 2 whole chickens at a time, so we are using about 10 pounds of bone in meat... We have been using roasters as they are less expensive than the young whole chickens.... The wife has decided to use the making of stock as a way to cycle the older dehydrated vegetables that we have in long term storage, after we believe in store what you eat and eat what you store....

If I could find a grocery store that was open at 04:30, I'd be in the checkout line with you....... All the stores around here don't open before 06:00 and I am usually there when they unlock the door....

Yeah I guess I don’t even know if there’s one open that early. I don’t want to go at 5pm after work. Too crowded !! I hate crowds

The only real shortage I have seen is cheap beef. I still find roast and "steak" at $3-4 a pound but when I do I buy it up. Chicken at $1-2 a pound is not terribly uncommon and I can find pork at a range between the two. I still buy whole milk at $2 per gallon.

There's no beef or toilet paper to be had on-line with the major supermarket chains.
Zero toilet paper at all at one store.

I had to spread my grocery order over two chains to get eggs, veggies, dog food,....managed to snag a 12 pack of toilet rolls...for a price.

MEAT...geeze....I found what I had previously thought was a outrageously priced boutique butcher in town that delivers.
Seems they are cashing in and their prices now seem reasonable compared to the out of stock prices at the supermarkets.
I brought on-line and for delivery -
3 large blade roasts.
1 'pandemic pack' -
Pandemic Pack
1.5kg Lamb Leg
1kg Steak Sandwich Rib Fillet
1kg Chicken Thigh Fillet
1kg Pork Shoulder Chops
1kg Gourmet Rissoles
1kg Diced Beef
1kg Mince
1kg BBQ Sausages
1kg American Ribs
this has a surprising amount in it....beef ,lamb, pork, chicken.
The total came to over $180 and the fact that it was actually available and there wasn't buy limits made me
so relieved.

Now the hospital cafeteria is out of a lot of food. None of the prepackaged sandwiches, wraps, yogurt stuff. They say it’s because of the snowstorms. Half of the drink case is gone and vending machines are all empty.
lots of old stale stuff. 😭
Of course this happened the one week my RV refrigerator went out so I’m not bringing my own food. Ugh.
PB&J?
The better 1/2 wanted some new curtains yesterday, and found the local Ikea had exactly what she wanted in stock online. Headed there (45 min drive) only to find the size/color combo out of stock even though their website said they had a dozen in stock! The shelves were severely bare - especially in the self-serve warehouse area. IDK if all the stock is on a ship somewhere, or if Covid is preventing the manufacture of goods overseas, but it felt vaguely dystopian in person.
For at least the past 6 months, if we need something (typically for work), I look online, then call store to verify. Can't tell you how many wasted trips it's saved.

Have you tried the local slaughter house/butcher shop? Ours is still in good shape, but I know how things are regional.

Do you have an ice chest?

I have not. I do know where there are a couple. I will let my fingers do the walking to see what is available. I have been working on emptying the freezer on my fridge and replacing with food that is frozen for individual meals. I could really use another freezer.

She's been nagging me to take up kayaking with her. So I found a jet powered kayak. She said that I need to "save up for it". Mean woman.
I know better dude. 😂 She is just wanting to spend quality time with you Bud and get you to exercise more. Hunny wanted me to take up kayaking years ago too. I went once. Then we just traveled the bayous around here with his boat.

Quality time and exercise do not need to take you outdoors. I am all for outdoor activities but the excuse of "exercise" outdoors is overrated. There is indoor exercise that burns massive amounts of calories and you don't have to leave the house or pay for a gym membership to do so. ;)

Hey, Tank...that's $10 a lb for meat...for mince and sausage. Wow.
Dr Jenner...we went without a fridge for awhile at our farm when coming for our week visits. Just used ice chests. You need to get one and go to the store. Or a 7 eleven or something. Our daughter up in WA was talking about all the flooding. Forgot to ask her about the store stocking. For the life of me, I don't know why she lives where she does.
I agree, Guardian about exercising indoors being ok, but it's so nice to be outside! I choose being outside more than being inside any day. If it's too cold (like today) husband and I at least take a drive.

Update:
We had some teething problems because this was the first time using this service and I didn't realise that they put the credit card transaction through when they finish putting the order together and it's ready to deliver NOT when I make the order on-line....so the funds weren't immediately deducted from my balance.
It made me think there were more funds in my account than there was so I went ahead and brought some dvd box sets.
They rang me to say the transaction had been declined.
Thankfully there was enough funds left in the account to get the 'pandemic pack'
but I had to remove the blade roasts from the order.
The meat, when it was delivered, was awesome as you would hope and expect when you're paying that much.
The chicken was missing in the order because the shop had run out but they assured me that it would be delivered
today for no extra charge.

Grocery supplies are stupid low atm and on-line ordering is problematic.
You put what few items you can find in your on-line cart and you press 'checkout'
and POOF 3/4's of your order disappears!
It doesn't tell you which items are missing so you have to click - continue shopping to see
what has been taken out and try to figure out what else they say is in stock or trying a smaller amount...
and around and around you go.
This happened with the two grocery chains that deliver.
I managed to snag a 12 pack of toilet paper that actually stayed in my cart when I hit checkout
and a lamb roast, a tiny pack of oyster blade steak <- you don't want to know the price I paid for THAT
eggs and 2 5kg bags of bread flour and grain free dog food for the land shark.
I was pretty worried about the dog food because it isn't the brand she normally eats and if her allergies react to it
it's another trip to the vet ..this time it'll be while she's out of her damned hormonal false pregnancy mind.
I don't have a muzzle for her and she's going to try to eat the vet.
No doubt eating the vet would cause her allergies to flair up even more...<--half kidding.

Different story but I thought it fit here. I saw the news today saying that due to Covid and supply chain issues that there are now shortages on most grocery store items (the list was too long for me to repeat but covered meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, and maple syrup). They said to expect the shortages to continue for up to 6 months...

What happened to it's all under control, there are no shortages, bs bs bs......

MSN is feeding the dumb sheep the same BS line here...everything is under control.....supply line disruption is only going to last 2 weeks <-- yeah, nah! Kinda like '2 weeks to flatten the curve' type of 2 weeks? Right.
There's plenty for everyone.

Not even close!

Well, I spoke too soon...

I just got a e-mail that the toilet paper, steak, bread flour, lemonade and dog food has been taken off one of my on-line orders.
They say I'm going to get a refund but I can't eat a refund..though Landshark would give it a good go.

The cynic in me is waiting for the other shoe to drop with my other on-line order.

I'll have to see if I have some freezer burnt chicken and boil up some rice and make chicken rice for the Landshark.

I am sorta surprised there isn't a "black market" starting up for certain things like TP. Save those catalogs and voter registration guides. Do you or can you still get phone books there?

We have plenty of dry, but the dogs also like to split a can of the wet stuff on top. The wet canned is in low supply around here, and the price is way up. Canned cat food, too. Friskies went up to 60 cents a can for the little cans and it used to be the cheap stuff. Plenty of dry cat food, but the cats don't prefer it.

I can up 7 pints of rice every week and add that and bacon fat or such to their food every morning.

Looks like I'm going to have to take the kayak out to the harbour and catch fish to feed both myself and the Landshark..
There's a large saltwater gecko that has made my local harbour facing beach home.
That beach is 2 blocks from where I live and it's the only real beach and launching spot for the kayak that's close.- as in put the kayak on a trolley and walk close.
The gecko is going to have to mind his manners because I'm going to go fishing regardless.

This morning I did a grocery store run, the only shortages that I saw were lunch meat and bread. The wife had given me a list of things that included a lot of high dollar items, I just put them in the cart and didn't even look at the tag.... Ended up with 3 grocery bags $175.....

I am going to the grocery auction this morning. Family says no, we don’t need any more and it’s 1 degree out. But, after reading these recent posts, I’m thinking maybe it won’t hurt to pick up more when I can. In a few short months it might be better than money in the bank.
Word is out on the auctions. Last week a new guy (English) came and bought up half the auction. Two pallets of canned goods. He’s not local.
It’s not nice when you take it all. If there’s 6, take half, not all. There are families who need too. By the case or by the single, leave some for someone else.
Panic seems to be a thought now, even with abundance.

Went to the grocery store for the first time since before Christmas - Wow! I will attach a pix of the tortilla shelves. I needed 3 things for Hubby: a specific tortilla chip, fresh tomatoes, & grapefruit juice. Got the tomatoes for $1.11 each - sm/med so not even very large. There were lots of holes. Tortilla chips are made locally so no problem and regular price. I thought the juice isle didn't look quite as bad as the tortillas until I realized it was all just fronted - one deep & no grapefruit juice.
IMG_4264.jpg
There are some to the left in the pix. You can see they are also fronted - only 1 deep.

Saw the clip on Fox News about the food shortages in DC, best lines from the clip:
Lady said, "They got to fix dis" and
a guy said ,"Things going to get rough out here, people gonna be starving".

Don't worry, Joe's gonna make everything alright.....
