My son brought 4 ribeye steaks last night for Father's Day, along with twelve assorted craft brewed beers. The steaks were 1 1/2" thick! I fired up the egg grill, but didn't think it would cook them inside enough for my taste. I got it to 550 deg's and seared them quickly on both sides, then slowed it down to give some smokey flavor. They were amazing! I think he spent 80 bucks on just the 4 steaks, which I would never do, but did really enjoy it. I had leftovers for lunch and will for at least two more meals. It's nice to get paid back for all that diaper duty finally :). I hope everyone else had a great Father's Day as well. It would have been perfect if I didn't have a hangover all day at work today!

We just all went to Texas Cattle Company (a steakhouse here in FL, and a few other places). Only steaks I like better than those we do on our grill. I got a crispy fried bacon and gravy appetizer, just for me, too. Damn, that is amazingly good. They even had a good deal, their usual $24.99 ribeye was only $15.99 for dads on Dad's Day.

I've seen the place but never ate there. I do sometimes miss living near Orlando, as there were so many options to eat at. I love living rural, but do miss a little variety and culture occasionally. I can drive an hour and be in more built up places, but have mostly mom and pop places here, some of which are pretty good. We just found a small place close that grows almost all their own food, and was really really good. They also sell grass fed beef and other meats, cheaper than the local Ingals grocery. They are a country store, with their own canned goods in mason jars, and the small restauraunt. So far I've been once, for a cheeseburger and salad, but may make it a common thing since it was so good.

Some of the best places to eat are those mom & pop places. It sounds like it would be right up my alley but hadn't found anything around here like it. We had grilled ribeyes, baked potatoes and I made a couple buttermilk pies so that was dessert. Yesterday I made butter so needed to do something with the buttermilk. Hunny told neighbor and he offered to buy if I made him one.

I have yet to find a gravy packet or can that I like.

by itself, no, but two cans of Campbells beef gravy, mixed with one can of Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup (the one that has the Garlic and Herbs), some Kitchen Bouquet for browning, and for quick gravy, it's pretty workable. In the stew, it's really just for thickening. The real flavor is from the stew seasoning.

My wife has a lot of good qualities, but I have to share this one recipe. Her family has this Christmas gruel tradition that they all love. I'm really anticipating how good this stuff is going to be as they talk about it all the time. Well, it's finally that time of year, and I get my bowl of this stuff that's been simmering all day. It was ok, but something just was missing to me. Of course I agreed it was the best stuff on the planet, but was really not impressed. Later on I discovered it was all canned Campbell's soups and canned beans, no doctoring at all. I use some soups to make some things better, and think it's wise to have some in your pantry, but hope I never have to survive on just them! :).
I hope my wife never logs in here.

Tonight's dinner was Blue Plate Specials (beef patties w/ green onions, 1 egg, 1 T prepared Mustard and 1/4 c seasoned bread crumbs) , a (homade) brown mushroom gravy with a little prepared horseradish, Wild Rice, Peas, Sweet & Spicy Cornbread, and leftover Buttermilk Pie.

I'm not even sure what a buttermilk pie is, but if you made it am sure it's good! I'm still polishing off fathers day steak, potatoe, green beans, and zucchini bread. There was an amazing brownie thing on Father's Day too, but it didn't last long enough for leftovers. I'm also sipping on an unusual beverage. The craft brewed beer variety pack my son brought had 2 "chocolate peanut butter porter" beers in it. The first sip was really weird, but it's growing on me as the comfortable numb does. :)

We have a winery and a brewery right up the road. They make some good stuff. Keel & Curley.

Trying new flavors is my favorite thing both in beverages and foods. I have a short attention span and get bored of the same old thing quickly. We had a place called the blind pig pub in deland Fla., they had something like 150 different imported beers to sample. They even had a card you could pick from the list and rate it for future reference. I didn't get too far on the list, but it was a cool idea.

Tonight's dinner is pretty basic. Winn Dixie sells these bags of chicken wings/drums that are ALWAYS buy one, get one (so for $13, you get two big bags of chicken, enough for all 5 of us to have about 10 wings each). My daughter works at Buffalo Wild Wings, so she picks up some different sauces and rubs (about $5 each, but each is good for about 3-5 different times of cooking this), and we basically make winghouse chicken at home, frying it up, and using the rubs and sauces. Some fries on the side, and we're golden.

Fried anything is my favorite! I don't get the wings too often anymore as they are about the most expensive part of a chicken now, and there the fattiest. I still think fried chicken is probably better than steak, and for me to say that it's really really good.

I dug up my potatoe patch and have loads of red potatoes now. Last night I chunked some up, coated with olive oil, garlic, a little salt and some chives and roasted them. I had picked them minutes before cooking em. I also marinated some zucchini and roasted it too. I added some leftover ribeye from Father's Day, and washed it down with two of those strong craft beers my son gave me. Life is good sometimes :).
With the potatoes, I also picked all the onions, (two boxes of them), a pile of yellow and white squash, zucchini and cucumbers, and the last of the carrot patch. I also got my first ripe tomatoe today! I sliced the red potatoes, onions and white squash, made a cheese sauce, and fried a pile of bacon. I mixed it all into a baking pan and will throw it in the oven for tonight's dinner. I also took my first tomatoe, some Cukes, zuke, and onions that are marinating in the fridge in a vinegarett mix for a cold salad tonight.
I took a big bag of produce to my daughter in law, but still have so much that dinner is going to be some variation of above for quite some time. I am storing the onions and potatoes, but don't know how long I can get them to last. I'm seriously thinking about getting some large pots and growing some veggies inside so I can have fresh stuff all year. The greenhouse helps prolong the season, and get started earlier, but there's still those summer things like Cukes, tomatoes and green peppers that only produce mid summer.

tonight was beef patties.ranch style beans and whole kernel corn.all washed down with milk..
Corn has finally gone down enough that I buy it again. I love good sweet corn on the cob! I normally don't like microwave cooking but now do corn in it and it turns out great. Cut he stalk end off, leaving the husk on, wet it and nuke it for three minutes. It turns out perfect every time, and all the husk/strings comes off easier than any other way I've ever done it.

Fun experiment last night.

At Publix (supermarket), they had these portabello mushroom flavored pork tenderloins. We got a couple of those, along with some mushroom rice. Then made a nice mushroom sauce with a mushroom gravy mix (just as a base), some butter, olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, and sauteed, sliced mushrooms. Sliced up the tenderloins, serve on a bed of the rice, and pour on the mushroom sauce and mushrooms....man, that was a good little experiment.

Took some for lunch today too, and had a bunch of folks in the lunchroom droolin', hehe.

And yeah, corn is pretty cheap now. We got a bunch to do this weekend, as we'll be doing some BBQ ribs, corn on the cob, etc. when friends come over.

Food is a huge part of my life now days. I've discovered I really like to cook, or eat anyways. Anything smothered in gravy and over a bed of rice is good in my opinion!
I get ribbed all the time at work for bringing in three course meals. What's funny is I'm a little jealouse of the fast food most people eat! Between being healthier, and saving money I only eat out a couple times a month now. Prepping supplies aren't as tasty as a double cheeseburger, but are a lot more practicle!

i sliced a pile of potatoes and onions, made some homemade cheese sauce, and put a layer of sliced smoked sausage on top. It's been baking for an hour plus, and I'm about ready to pull it out. I'm tired tonight, so that and a piece of bread is dinner. The cheese sauce is three teaspoons of butter with salt, pepper, chives and garlic, mixed with three tablespoons of flour. I mix it and add two cups of milk till boiling, then throw in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Pour that over about six medium sliced potatoes and half an onion. Bake covered for 1 hour, then uncover for thirty more minutes uncovered at 350 deg. It's one of those easy dishes that are so good!
I'd love to try some others' good, quick favorites.
Hmm i myself had fried potatoes , yellow sqaush also fried , and fried pork loin that a marinaded in terryaki ,garlic, pepper and fake salt /potassium <----- blood pressure issues lol .. must have been good noone spoke till there plates were empty!

Doing fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and some green beans (with some added onion and ham) tonight. Nice and simple.

Last night was awesome though. Steak, and we got some shrimp and this great Carribbean rub, with corn on the cob too, all thrown on the grill.

I copped out and brought home a Walmart rotessirie chicken tonight. Threw in some roasted garlic red potatoes and green beans from the garden, and I'm content with the world. I'll get two more meals from the chicken too. Not bad for 5bucks.

I did the cop out myself. . . hunny had leftover grilled pork chop butter beans and green beans and I had leftover Manwhich with a slice of onion. We were supposed to have gone some where today but it fell thru so dinner was what it was. Just glad we had leftovers and if we didn't I would have used some storage items

That's the whole point of having storage, not just for emergencies. Most of my life I'd be in the middle of making dinner and realize I was out of something I needed. Now I have a fairly well organized pantry, with food, spices, condemints, etc. I went grocery shopping yesterday and added 24 cans of chicken for 1.50 ea :). Whenever something is on sale I snag it.

Oh, almost forgot, since this thread is about food anyways. I picked a bunch of stuff yesterday. I got another gallon of blackberries, about a gallon of blueberries, and tomatoes and okra from the garden. Last night I made my first ever blueberry pie. I cheated and bought the crust, just because it's so easy. I used a Betty Crocker receipe I found online, and it was/is one of the best things I've ever had! I started a 5gal batch of blackberry wine, as I really don't like the seeds in them for fresh eating. I have both wild and cultivated blackberries. The wild ones are dangerous to pick, and small and tart. But the store bought thornless ones are really sweet and huge. I just mixed them all together. I keep hearing that blackberry wine is a great flavor, I'll let you know in about three months.

Since it is the weekend I had my favorite breakfast. I fried up my potatoes with okra and white squash, and of course used some of the grease from the pan of bacon. Yum. I finished it off with a slice of zucchini bread. Who cares about a little cholesterol. :)

Ended up taking some round steak and dredging in some seasoned flour, browned both sides in some butter, added in some beef stock and then some red wine. Added in some mushrooms, onions, salt, pepper, and some thyme. Cooked for a couple hours till tender and served over a bed of rice. Sure there is a name for it, I just don't have one. Also since it was a butter day, made another buttermilk pie, which is like a custard. Made with sugar, eggs, salt, vanilla and buttermilk. Today I added a sprinkle of cinnamon on top before I threw it in the oven, Told hunny to not tell the neighbor I was making this pie! When he found out last time, he wanted a pie too but I wanted to save my last cup of buttermilk for some biscuits.

Now I'm hungry again!
