And what is taxed and what is exempt........???
Went up to 6% here a couple years ago from 5%. I don't know if anything is exempt. Fortunately for us I have tax exempt forms on file for several businesses around here, due to the ranch. Also we're only a hundred miles or so from a no sales tax state. So in reality we pay very little sales tax.

Edit: most prescription drugs are exempt. And some counties can add up to an extra 2.5% for a total of 8.5%!

4.00 percent

Georgia Tax Rates, Collections, and Burdens Georgia also has a 4.00 percent state sales tax rate and an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 7.38 percent. Georgia has a 0.72 percent effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing value. Georgia does not have an estate tax or inheritance tax.

Twice a year we have a holiday on tax for food and or school supplies.

It’s 6.625% in NJ. Clothing, presription drugs, paper goods and food are exempt. If the food is prepared (grocery, deli, restaurant), then it’s taxed. Years ago when Florio was governor he tried to tax paper goods and feminine hygiene products. New Jerseyeans TP’d the state house and governor’s mansion.

7.75%. One of the lowest in our state.

Now, of course, the city just placed it on the election ballot to increase it 1% so the city can use it to balance their budget. Well, I was taught we ALL have to balance our own budgets, so why not our local government?

The vote was 75% against this tax increase, and 25% in favor of it.

7%

Food exempted. Food that can't be consumed on the spot like chips, candy bars and restaurants.

Ben is in the next County over from me which IIRC imposes a 1% sales tax on top of the State's tax..
6% in my County

As @Neb stated, prepared and snack foods are not exempt. Groceries, prescription medications and most clothing items are not subject to sales tax.

I see now most mail order companies charge sales tax too. That's just bull shyt. I'm glad that we live close to a no sales tax state.

Yes they do. Every site I buy from charges sales tax.

When I do my State income taxes, it even asks if you purchased something out-of-state without sales taxes being incurred at the sale. If you answer yes, they want to know the price of the items and they hit you with the sales tax.

I prefer sales tax over income or property taxes.

Sales tax is up to me on things I WANT not what I need.

@Neb In our State - I've been searching to see if it's still an option (can't find it yet) but a couple decades ago as I recall, if you paid (and can prove) you paid sales tax in excess of what you owed in income tax, they accepted your sales tax as payment enough and you didn't owe income taxes.

We itemize and use a professional tax prep team. I will mention it but suspect we are paying only what we need pay.

We are refiling for our homestead exemption. Our house is under two titles but part of the same house.

My Texas county property tax is highest, followed by school tax, college tax and water district. There doesn't seem to be much correlation between real estate price and valuation. Assessor sets valuations on what the county needs to operate. Case in point, natural gas and energy valuation tanked this year so with no energy jobs, all of a sudden residential value go up. My tax amount went up 33% over last year. At least the school tax has a $100,000 exemption now.

The sales tax I pay depends on which direction I drive to go shopping.

One direction there is zero sales tax, but the community is more remote so prices are higher regardless. The other direction, the sales tax is 3%. Sales tax is capped at the first $1,000 of large purchases. Exclusions are mind numbing and too numerous to list.

12% in my province.
For those who were taken aback by the high sales tax I mentioned above, I apologize if that shocked anyone or caused confusion. My fault, as I neglected to mention that the taxes we pay here in my province are what pay for all of our universal health care, hospitals, clinics, lab work, etc. for all resident Canadian citizens living in the province.

Also we don't pay sales tax on children's clothing, foot wear, school supplies and children's other sundry essentials, children's medications, car seats, diapers, etc.

Luxury and non-essential food items (like prepared take out fast-foods, bags of chips, candies, certain types of non-essential specialty food items, etc.) are taxed. But there is no tax on regular basic essential staples groceries, dairy products and beverages that you take home and prepare into meals, and no tax on full service restaurant meals. There are probably several other items we don't pay taxes on but I don't recall them off the top of my mind right now.
