Snappy may want to try using automotive conduit over the wires to keep the cat from chewing them. I had to use it on my wires because Bethesda went through a cord-chewing phase.

I'm back (for now). We think we are smarter than the cat. Time will tell. We found a very heavy fireplace stand up cover--not sure what it's called. So far, so good. If we have another problem, we will use some of your tactics. I think I should just let the cat sleep overnight in his crate/ not carrier-this is big enough for 2 pygmy goats to sit in. But DH doesn't want to contain the cat, so...

No, it will keep on going, but instead of the user being named, they are provided a number that replaces the user.
