For many I suspect chickens for eggs will become increasingly vital for survival . I also wonder with the war on Chickens that we are seeing " if baby chick sells will be outlawed by the communists " Do any of you guys have any information as to whether baby chick sells will be available next spring ? --- I have chickens but no rooster , but another of my survival tribe does have chickens and a rooster , so I have been contemplating on getting an incubator for " just in case " . I don't want to wait and hope a chicken decides to raise off some chicks as the SHTF situation worsens .

in a SHTF event we can eat any wild birds eggs it dosent have to just be chickens.
I prefer duck eggs myself anyway.

we did a monthly big shop last week, no shortages, no gaps on the store shelves, pretty much normal here.
no problems with getting meat (from the farm) no problem getting eggs (from a different farm).
local market still functioning as normal.

If I had it to do over again, I would have invested in one of those kerosene incubators the Amish use from Lehman's just in case power is inconsistent. We just got a letter in the mail for electric saying our rates are increasing.

We are switching to a couple broody, dual purpose varieties, too.

Do you have Amish in your area? They almost always have extra roos they'll sell.

I'm in Britain so I wouldnt know what grows in the US.
I grew Beef Tomatoes in containers last year and the quantity and quality were excellent.
strawberries are not something I normally grow, we prefer Raspberries and we grow Raspberry canes in a raised bed every year.

The Louisiana strawberry grows well in containers.

We grow several types of strawberries here, June bearing as well as ever bearing. A couple years ago I dug up some wild strawberry plants and planted them in the garden. They all do well here.

I can't get them to grow here where I am in FL. I ordered some in baskets also this past year from Starke Bros. They produced a few tiny berries then died out, same with ones in garden or anywhere else I put them out..

I’ve been saying that food shortages are a tool used by the socialist in this country as a motivation for years. I think the end goal is really quite simple; that goal is revolution. It’s hard to vote in anything substantial in this country because the system is deadlocked via design. The issue with this is that the people in power right now want socialism so bad they can’t stand it. Historically people won’t commit to a revolution if they’re comfortable though. Insert economic hardship and food shortages and you now have people’s motivation. All you have to do from there is blame capitalism. This is one of the reasons I really don’t think it will matter if you have a farm in the country or an apartment in the city. The people will still come for you if you’re not with them. They will paint you as a “have” and you will be targeted to give to the “have nots”. Things are gonna get quite violent, and the institutions of power will be against us as well…. I hope I’m wrong, but keep your powder dry and your head on a swivel.

we dont have food shortages in Britain, what we have is cost of living inflation, food inflation is currently at +16.7% , it is reckoned people will pay an extra £788 average on their annual food bill.

Have y'all had problems with rotten produce?

This time of year, I can usually count on fresh kale, cabbage, and oranges. Yesterday we threw out a ton of kake we'd just bought the day before and 2 bags of oranges that had molded. I would expect things like berries to go bad quickly in January, but not kale.

Almost everything that is not organic has been treated some way to make it LOOK fresher and SEEM to be still good for a longer time. That does not mean that it is still good tho.

I will say my lemons and oranges that I have never sprayed or put anything but organic fertilizer on, go bad quicker inside than store bought. They may not be certified organic but I might have 2 years to go.
The oranges make a better tasting adult orange juice than store bought juice or oranges.
I am still overwhelmed on how to use all the lemons from one tree.
If the lime tree would produce……that wouldn’t be a problem.

It was kind of a big fun deal to put the apples down the polisher. We were dumping a wax on them.

I used to shop at Wal-mart but then their produce was as you described. HEB all the way now. No more issues. Even with their organics. If I am not mistaken, they buy locally when they can.

Yes, here it's most all of them except publix and they are higher than a kyte..so I guess ya gotta weight paying out the Ying yang for grub to last a week vs a day or 2 for things you can't grow well yourself.

We only buy from locals if we do not have any self-grown left. Potatos and garlic last for months, tomatos, carrots, cauliflower, cellery and parsnips last for 2-3 weeks and are still good too.
Yesterday was payday and we went shopping, TP, sugar, oil, detergent, dishsoap, handsoap, meat, cheese, dog food, 25 cartons of milk AND COOKIES!!
Filled the tank on the car too, all together we spent about $275.00 but have what we need in simples for over 2 months without touching any preps. This is about a quarter of out entire income, but we are glad to be able to get anything still.
Funny, if we buy milk with 2,8% fat-you can only get 3 cartons...if you buy milk with 1,5% fat--you can buy as much as you can afford...
Sugar is limited to 2 kilos, flour is only limited if you buy the cheap stuff. If you want the more expensive and better quality--you can get as much as you wish.
At the gas station, you can fill your tank but only up to 50 liters at a time. (about 13 gallons). But, you could go to the next gas station and get more if the tank is not full.
The EU is trying to force HUNGARY into supporting the sanctions against Russia but Pres. Orban is fighting back and trying to keep us out of the BS. We have heard allthough, that the Ukrainians are driving around in the eastern side of their nation (which was Hungarian till WWII) and picking up any and all Hungarian men and boys older than 16 yrs. and sending them to the front without any training to use as cannon food in the meat grinder around Bakhmut and the front lines behind Kherson and Kharkiv.

our meat and eggs are locally sourced, I can get vegetables from a local small holding(small farm) and they have not been treated with chemicals- I know some of the workers there who are all locals too.

We're at the grocery store right now. Everything looks "normal" here, just expensive. No shortages. All produce, fruits and vegetables are from Mexico or some other place down south. Fruits, potatoes and onions are from cold storage. Which is all normal for this time of year.

I buy citrus on sale around NOW and can a citrus blend in a super light syrup in pint jars. Shelf stable and it kind of doubles as dessert for my husband and I during the winters and a great source of vit C. My local Kroger is running a great citrus sale right now.
