It many years ago at Thanksgiving , my hubs decided to go turkey hunting in our woods. We had a house full of family there. I heard a "help!" And looked and my hubs, who has a large belly, come in the back door bent over holding his pants leg behind his knee. He "get my pants off, I'm holding a scorpion"! So, everyone was looking over the bar watching me trying to undo his pants so he can get out of them without getting stung again. I'm laughing so hard that the tears were rolling and he's dancing around saying "get em off hurry!" I can't reach his button. I finally got it open so he could get the pants off. Quite a memory!!

@gumpy you get to sell popcorn and tickets for my naked rain dance with two provisos 1) I get a cut of the action 50% 2) everyone signs a waiver, I don’t want to get sued because of someone’s nightmares or PTSD

Reading the stories you have all shared about fire ants and scorpions makes me glad I live up north. You have nasty critters and snakes and such, all we have to worry about is bears, wolves, cougars, avalanches and frostbite. Much more civilized

@gumpy fishing is always more fun when you catch them. There is a little lake about 6k cross country from my house (but a 45 minute drive cause there is a mountain in the way and you can’t get there from here) the locals ignore cause the fish are too small. You can catch rainbows and brookies about a pound in size all day long. We catch and release most of the but always take our limit home to eat. That’s my kind of fishing.

Hi @Double R How are the calves doing?
Sorry! Fell asleep!

I'm doing ok,how about you?
Hanging in there.

Is there any way to get rid of fire ants?

This is the hay field closest to the house. Almost all of the dark spots you can see in this pic are fireant beds. There are literally hundreds in this field.

My gandpa came up with a technique to deal with them that I still use. It takes advantage of a specific set of winter weather conditions. Every 3-5 years the conditions occur, not something I can do every year.

On a cold winter day when it starts to rain late in the afternoon turning to sleet or snow… I take a shovel and turn the ant beds over. This freezes and drowns most the ants. It usually kills the queen too. A lot of work in miserable conditions but it works. It takes a few years for the ant population to recover.

There are insecticides I could buy but I don’t want a bunch of chemicals in the grass.

. Wow I can’t even imagine

You can chase em around the farm with a bucket of Malathon! I don't reckon you can kill the whole hill. They just move over bout 20' and start another colony. It's a never-ending battle.

I had a ribeye at the little restaurant that’s out here in the country, tasty. On the way home, I stopped at my neighbor’s hay field. There were 17 does and fawns grazing in the corner. This is only 300 yards from my garden. I haven’t planted anything yet but with that many deer so close… I foresee a problem in my future. I’ll have to break out another electric fence charger and peanut butter. Deer love peanut butter. I wipe it on the wire fence and deer will try to lick it off… once! :D They will usually avoid the area for a few months afterwards.

So that is a hay field. Do you mow and bale, or stack the hay, or do you graze cattle in there? I would think that fire ants could wreak havoc with animals.

I agree about not using chemicals, but getting rid of fire ants? Ugh!

So what a day. After working out I came home and ordered some more trees for the orchard. These are in addition to the apricot tree, useless apple tree, four cherry trees, two existing peach trees, hazel nut bushes and three pecan trees already growing. I ordered two apple trees (red and golden delicious), a third peach tree, a nectarine tree and a plum tree. Can't wait till they are all producing fruits and nuts for me.

Then I looked at my phone and health insurance bills to pay them. The insurance company apparently want to make me may an increase retroactively. The phone company is raising my bill another $5 a month for the second time in two months.
So if I disappear it because I canceled the internet and died from not having health insurance so my Dr won't treat me anymore.

My neighbor with the ducks brought over two goose eggs for me to try in case the ducks don't work out. I made us omelets and they were very good. So if he doesn't get ducklings maybe I'll get some geese from him. Either way just one goose egg made a whole omelet as big as three large chicken eggs. I guess the Muscovy duck eggs are about 2/3 there size.
