Made a HomeD run this morning, got some potting soil, some #2 and #3 nursery pots, some seeds (found something I didn't have) and some sweet potato tubers (I've never grown them but the wife has me buy some each year so). I also picked up enough clear plastic to re-make my raised bed tops for the next 2 years (I already had enough for next year, but I'm kinda of a prepper). So now I am ready to do a little work this evening...

Wow do I feel behind. Started seeds indoors on Saturday under LED lights.

This is only my second year of gardening. Last year, we ended up killing it on tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, lettuce, peppers and green beans. We didn't do so good on corn (1 good crop out of 4), potatoes, onions, carrots or garlic. Hoping to fix that this year while adding zucchini, beats, and broccoli.

I have four larger (4'x8') and two smaller (3'x3') raised beds and will be looking to get a greenhouse this fall. Appreciate seeing the work done and tips given.

Today after work I was able to cut out the broken PVC pipe and ball valve in my irrigation system and install the new parts, now I am back in business.

I also got part of the PV array frame that I'm going to keep stained and varnished, it shouldn't take long to get it finished once I remove the panels and dissemble the old supports, I figure I can get it done if I have 3 days without rain.

I saw 4 starter cups with sprouts (Roma tomatoes, celery, leeks and something else), I can transplant them as soon as my new cups arrive, hope I don't have to wait too long. I did put the sweet potatoes into one of the trays, I kind of improvised, hope it works out.

While I was out there working today I saw a carpenter bee and a couple of those white butterfly's trying to get to my cabbage and broccoli... They just kept bumping the netting and eventually gave up and went to a neighbors shrubs.

Ding ding ding ding

We have a winner!

I already have loads if the deer netting and can fix it over my cages!

No need to order the netting after all.

Thank you!

Ben

This evening I started seeds in my last 4 starter cups, I ordered a bunch but they are DELAYED will arrive next month. Went on Amazon and ordered a few to fill the gap, they should be here on Thursday. This year is so much different than last year, (last year this time I had big plants growing everywhere) and I ended up giving things away. This year I lots of things growing but not so much big plants, just starters and I am only starting what I have room for (or can make room for). The plan to have 3 or 4 staggered plantings is going to be very interesting.

I have two flats of tomatoes and peppers growing well, my herbs and flowers are just kind of getting started.

We used to stagger crops usually tomatoes and sweet corn summer and fall crops.

Our tomatoes are only for canning so we don't need to stagger them.

We do stagger radishes, lettuce, beans, and corn. All of which do just fine direct planted.

I use my grow station for getting an early start to extend my growing season in late winter into spring but rest of the time it is used for cloning and experiments.

We would plant around 400 tomato plants early and 200 plants about a month later. Before the first frost we would gather the green tomatoes and individually wrap them in news paper and put them in the basement and cellar. we would have good tomatoes until Christmas.

That's a good first year!
@hashbrown I just cut the branches w/ fruit on them and hung them upside down in the summer kitchen (or a cellar would work but I don't have one) & we also had toms. until Christmas. It was crazy! Some of those herb sprouts are tiny aren't they? Not sure how to deal with them yet.

Tonight I planted 2 bunches of onions, Highlander and Red Torpedo, and a bunch of shallots. Also planted 6 cabbage, 6 spinach, and 6 Romaine lettuce plants.

More asparagus coming up, latest peas are starting to break thru, same with carrots, parsnips and 1st round of taters.

I ran out of daylight before I got my 2nd batch of taters planted.

Got the supports built and the lights installed out in the greenhouse. Bought a heavy duty extension cord to handle the load of lights, heat mats, and heater, all seems to be working just fine so far. Greenhouse is maintaining right around 45-50 overnight when it's been around 25-35 outside so I'm happy. Friends came over to help and we have five 72 cell flats planted so far. Mostly tomatoes, flowers, and some herbs. I'll be doing more later this week.

Something (guessing earwigs) ate all the heads and leaves off our marigold starts in the greenhouse. 😭 It has begun. :blow up:
That sounds like a declaration of war, prepare to die bugs!!!

I couldn't help myself I bought a cheapo set of starter trays and planted them last night (now I need more flat surfaces!). In the good starter cups I started a cup with rosemary and one with Brussels Sprouts, so I'm all out of cups again. We are expecting rain today so I opened up all by raised bed tops so the salad veggies can get a drink on the house.

I want to grow some corn (I have some old seeds), but the wife says no corn.... I was thinking I have a small 3'X5' raised bed that is completely out of her sight (remember she can only look out windows). Anyway I think I could plant some fast growing corn in there, harvest it in June and have Okra ready to go back in there (Okra hates going in early here) and I would have a win win, unless I get caught by the boss.... ;)

Hey Urban...you need four rows of corn for it to do any good. But I did that last year and it wasn't any good, but I planted way to late. It was not knee high by the fourth of July.
I was looking as squeezing in a matrix of 5X11 plants, the usable area is 3'x7' so they will be tight. I started some seeds last night, I was aiming for 72 plants, I actually need 55 so I have some wiggle room if some don't come up. They will be in an area that gets full sun and lots of wind, but there are posts at each corner so I can support them enough to keep them vertical. My goal is to grow them for 4 weeks indoors and then move them into the bed mid April... The package says 65 days to maturity, which would mean I can harvest and transplant with okra by July 4th, assuming the package didn't lie.... I am looking at my tomato beds and trying to figure out if I can put 2 shelves at the end with about 2 1/2 feet of vertical space between them it would give me room for about a dozen potted plants (thinking broccoli and cauliflower). I can put netting over the whole works to contain the insects. Last year the vertical cucumbers did well, this year they will get their own trellis. I am trying to squeeze in so many things it is a bit overwhelming. But when you consider I only have 600 sq feet available space outside and 16 sq feet at my indoor growing station, I think I am making the best of a bad situation.... Yep, if my roof was flat I'd be planting it....

I have grown corn in a tight 5x5 matrix in 4x4 raised beds with good success. I plant as soon as the ground is about 70 degrees. Then add a new box every other week. With 4 boxes I get 2 months worth of corn on the cob.

I just checked an old picture that showed the corn was pushing 9' on 11 July.

@UrbanHunter

Maybe do a 4x4 matrix and plant a new batch after two weeks?

I am very excited this year, the irrigation system is now collecting water, the pump has been tested, the solar panels are charging the batteries for the indoor growing station and the inverter can drive the water pump.

I have celery, lettuce, spinach, onions, cabbage, broccoli, radishes, beets, carrots, turnips, tomatoes, and potatoes growing now... so yep I'm stoked.

Have considered doing some walk around videos so 5he Mrs can follow you around the garden and track your progress?

Funny you should say that @Neb , she wants me to take her around to see the red bud tree I planted for her. I grew it for 5 years in a container before I transplanted it last year. I told her that it's raining and the rain will collect in the seat of her wheel chair... Friday should be a good day for that. The garden area is stair-stepped on 4 different levels and there is just no way. If I tried to do a video she would get upset at the messes I haven't cleaned up yet... I spend my time making messes not cleaning them up.....
