years ago i planted some stuff and my dad said what ya doing kid..i said looking to see if it the seeds sprouted. he said you know better than that. i looked at him and said a person can wish cant they....he walked off laughing and said yes they can..yes they can...lol.. !!

I have some catching up on this thread to do. 3-4 pages! I took my raised bed frames to the powder coater this morning so looking forward to getting those back.
Wanted to let @Tommyice know I watched the whole series of the Victorian Kitchen Garden and just ordered the book 😊 Thank you for the recommendation. I was going to rewatch (which I still might) and take notes, but I'll now wait until I get the book and see what info it has then see how many notes I might need (or not) to take.

Looking forward to the book review! I didn't know they had an accompanying book. I've watched that series about 4 times now.

Broccoli and cabbage was planted outside two days ago. Right after planting, when I was inside the house, the dog decided to "till the garden" for me. Yup, what I just planted. She never knew how to open the gate but figured it out. Guess she really wanted that blood meal that was added. Made it so she can't open the gate and now my garden now looks like Stalag 13. Potatoes planted last night and tonight the spinach is moving their "forever" home.

Over the weekend I'll be moving the peppers and tomatoes to the greenhouse.

Hey @Tommyice I'm with you on the Stalag 13, between birds, squirrels, stray cats, and dogs I am constantly fighting an uphill battle... Ho don't forget the dang butterfly's and caterpillars, I think I need an anti-aircraft gun installation. I have lots of wood working to do to finalize my current list of projects for the garden. I am debating on whether to use paving stones on put down pressure treated planks, the area is only about 25 sq feet but it is a mix between red clay and black dirt, every time it rains I end up tracking stuff into the house. I have already stained the carpet in the basement to the point it looks like I have been doing all my oil changes in there, without a catch tray. The paving stones would match what I already have, the lumber would be cheaper....

Not sure what slope your land lays at. But lumber could get slick when wet or muddy. Pavers not so much. Just a thought

I was out right after the snow this morning, looking at the garden dirt. Wondering when the kale was coming up. But hey, I've been staring at the icicle radishes, and it worked. They came up yesterday.
I've not heard of icicle radishes. I planted French Breakfast radishes and they are up. I've read of radishes for breakfast and thought it was strange so when I saw these, had to try. They are only about 1/2" tall at the moment - will keep you posted.

I have, they look like white carrots, but are radishes, common in Asia for many years.

Well I decided to go with paving stones for walkways between my raised beds to reduce the dirt migration into the house. Have you ever noticed that when you are at the home project stores everyone disappears when you start stacking bricks? Because I was looking at it from a total revamp perspective I ended up just filling the back of the truck up. I saw some head romaine seeds so I picked up 4 packets, that may have over loaded my cart :)

I will get to see how that wheel barrow works out as I move this stuff around the house and down the hill. I really want to be ready to start moving plants by Sunday afternoon so getting all this ground work done is a big deal to me.

Should have brought the son to do the lifting😁

First he would have to wake up... I finished making the over-the-grape vine hoop supports all that is left on that is attaching them 20 screws and it's done.

I dug up the first 10 feet of walkway paving stones so they can be cleaned, I raised the soil level in the area where I am adding stones, I need to finish compacting it.

While I was taking a break I varnished 1 side of the lid frame kits I made for the raised bed up grades. I think they will be pretty, sort of a red oak color with the white bug cloth and frosh shield. I'm on a break now drinking a soda and trying to remember if I had breakfast...

Talked with the wife about the paving stones, she said that she was out there while I was doing it, that places it over 17 years ago. I don't think it's a bad trade 3 days of hard work to not weed for 17 years......

Well shoot, my soda is empty so break time must be over... That boss of mine is a slave driver. ;)

I soaked 50 Castor beans overnight and planted them in trays this morning. I know they are dangerous but they make beautiful ornamentals. I pulled my great grandpas old push plow out this morning. My grandpa put a old set of tiller handles in it after the wood handles rotted out. It would be cool to know just how many years it has been in use, I’m sure it has to be close too a 100 years if not more by now.

I got the the German Butterball, Kenebec, and red potatoes ready to go for this year. Ran out of bone meal (my bad!). Found it on Amazon for less than $2/lb so ordered (2) 24 lbs bags. That should keep me for a while. The fingerling and Purple Viking potatoes will have to wait to get fed.

I put all of the seedlings and grape vines clones out on the deck to start hardening them off. It was very windy so I brought them back in after about 4 hours. I still have 2 weeks until we move into the "maybe" phase for frost.

I have purple majesty potatoes, 2.5 lb.
I got them from Filaree Garlic farm.
They are late, we plant white potatoes in Feb. 14 or there about.

I pulled up all the old paving stones and started re-leveling the base. I figure I pulled about 60 sq-feet of stones, plus pulling any weeds as I went, I started to was the old stones, but it turned out to be a chore... I picked up another 60 sq-feet of stones to expand my walk ways. As the sun was going down I unloaded them and moved them to the back yard to be close to the project. The wheel barrow worked fine. I was able to get the second side of the raised bed top frames painted and I got the Tee supports installed on the grape vines, now they can be supported better to allow the fruit to hang properly. The Tees have a hole in the top at each end to hold a low hoop support so I can stretch bird netting over them without getting tangled in the vines. My shoulders hurt and I think I need another 8 bags of sand to lay the paving stones properly.

Our house guest (son's friend) asked what our Saturday routine was? I said that I usually sleep in. She quickly responded, so what does that mean 06:00? The wife chimed in and said more like 05:00...

Well guys, I'm pooped, see you tomorrow.

I’m tired of packing my trays out in the sun and dragging them back in the house. I decided to buy some lights and build a little starter room in the basement. I got my lights today and will start building the little room tomorrow. I’ve never started any plants with lights so any help would be appreciated.

That'll work! The only weird thing I did was save empty kleenex boxes to use as temp risers to be closer to the lights while the seeds are sprouting. The shelf I used has a lots of space between the shelves. I didn't want to move the lights closer to the plants. This was easier.
Building a room sounds great! You'll have no problem filling it

I have 1300 watts of full spectrum led maybe a foot over my seedings this morning. I’m going to try and get around and gather material to build my little room. I’m thinking a 4’x8’ room. I have no idea what I’m doing except for building the room, I can handle that part.

Can you share where you got the lights from? A relative of mine has been having a difficult time finding some and he won't buy from Amazon.

The lights came with a pulley system for raising and lowering them, I don't know how high to put it over the plant or how long they should be on at a time.
