Lifted one full bed and one 8 ft row of potatoes, picked a huge basket of peas and put them and courgettes / zucchinis into freezer. Weeded everything else and tided in veg garden, have to tackle the polytunnel now. Ordered my winter onion and garlic sets last night, and have done out my rotation plan for spring.
What zone are you in? I have not ever planted winter onions and you have peaked my interest

Elk got me curious so I went and checked my peppers. My jalapenos are turning red. My cayenne's are still blooming, some peppers there. I got 3 banana pepper plants and they are loaded.

The surprise was the watermelons. I thought they'd all died in June during the drought. I might actually get a melon this year. I found 2 little ones.

Are you sure you have enough peppers!??!

Those peppers would go fast round here... I use plenty when I make big batches of burrito mix, lol. I also like 'em in omelets or scrambled eggs, along with other veggies & some sorta meat. I use 'em in cowboy fare like beef & beans, I even use 'em raw in salads & on burgers. Peppers rock! And they're good for you too! :)

Actually no!! 9 pepper plants died in june. I was a little late in realizing they were in trouble. I dug a hole beside every plant and watered them at night. Saved a few, lost all the bell peppers and jalapenos but for a plant each. :(

Shots of weed plants taken yesterday afternoon... I have done NOTHING to these plants except water them, this is an experiment using amended soil and I just wanna see how the plants do entirely on their own. 🤔

Next we have the watermelon vine which is doing pretty well, it sure spread out fast... I'm not sure what that dark spot is on the largest melon (so far), I hope it doesn't have some sorta problem. Other shots show melons in various stages of development. Next season, I am going to grow heaps of melons, as they seem to do well here.

Otherwise, the experimental garden is doing alright, the fruit trees are still growing and the pepper plant is producing... I will plant more peppers next season, as they grow very well in this climate. New Mexico is famous for its chile peppers, might as well stick with what thrives here, aye? So far, the list includes weed, melons, peppers & goatheads, lol. 😳

Edit: By the time I harvest those weed plants in October, they will have some MONDO SPEARS on 'em, lol... I've grown plenty o' dope in the past (illegally, of course), especially in the back yard in Coronado, and the buds on these New Mexican plants don't look bad, considering that I've done no topping or other plant work whatsoever.

I have to research growing those in my state. I have plenty of room for a few plants. I know for a fact in a tincture it's an excellent pain reliever. I used some when I got hurt by a big bull. A buddy was using it, commercial roofer. He fell through the roof of a school, broke his neck, back, sternum and one shoulder. He used pot tincture instead of the narcotics he was prescribed. Those pills had him so doped up he almost burned his house down, not once but twice. Pot tincture saved his life. It relieved his pain and didn't turn him into a drooling idiot. He was able to take care of himself.

A good winter project... don't even know were to start.

Made like the tinctures you told me how to make with the other herbs?

I’ll help you get going if the legal aspects work out. Start composting your chicken manure now.

The most basic way is a standard 1:2 volume tincture. 1part herb, 2 parts alcohol. Folks add a little lavender oil for scent and put it in a small spray bottle.

Thinking back, pot has a lot of tars which disolve better in alcohol than they to in water. I'd use pure grain alchol and shoot for about 120 to 130 proof when I mixed the menstrum. I might also use heat like I'm doing right now with Usnea tinctures. Usnea has a lot of tars that disolve better in alcohol and is best rendered using a crockpot.

Let me talk to a couple people I know who might have experience with the medicine side.

Thanks my friend!

Just guessing on the best way to tincture. Someone somewhere has the hard data about the plant properties. Time to dig through botany data bases.

Now that's its legal in many places I need to research all aspects starting with the medicine.

I need to dig into my states actual laws on the subject too. Which dept in your state runs that show?

Holy Cow!!! Those are some healthy plants, Hashbrown!

I could never smoke that much dope, lol... not when I have a bong hit about every 2 weeks, sometimes longer.

But like Peanut said, it IS a good pain reliever, I'd rather use it than ANY Big Pharma cr@p, that's for sure.

When I thrashed my knee dirt biking in the White Mountains of Arizona, I wound up doing tequila shots & smoking weed for pain relief... worked just fine. ;)

P.S. I'd use some of those buds to make brownies or something, and throw in all the shake...

Hell I don’t even smoke it!

I have hemp seeds I'm happy to post; but I don't know what variety they are. PM me if you want them.

None of my peppers has any plants on them, maybe I planted too late. Harvested a surprise lot of raspberries and strawberries, my second bed of mange tout and did a general clean-up. The spuds in the field have been dug over by the bloody hens without us realising, so have lost a few to light, they've gone green. The plan is to start taking honey tomorrow, hopefully the wasps haven't stolen it!

I don't either. I have CFS. I don't need another reason to sit in my recliner. Getting out of my chair is my single biggest struggle each day.

But as a pain reliever it's excellent. I had a little bottle of topical spray. Alcohol based so it evaporated after spraying on my skin. About 10mins later I was pain free (knee damaged by a big charolais bull). The doc gave me a prescription for opioid pain relievers. I'd rather use the spray. The pills made me idiot or just made me sleep.

been getting plenty of rains.last night got a bit over an inch. monthof august totals are just a bit over 6.75inch and still a few days to go. my sweet corn was looking good..not now....enough to make a preacher cuss i tell ya...and cuss very loud. blank..blank...blank...blank...and blank !!

Haha, I hear ya... I'm not a big pothead, I'm just growing it because it's now legal, maybe I'll make some tincture like Peanut does. I really only started these plants as an experiment in soil amendment, but they're doing okay, considering that I'm just letting them grow on their own... I wanna see what Nature throws my way, lol.

Goathead war update: torched some 'carpets' of young vines, but the wind rose and the flamethrower became too dangerous to use near all the pine needles and whatnot, so I reverted to hand pulling the miserable vines. Filled several Walmart bags with the noxious weeds, many of the vines were loaded with goatheads too.

I must admit, there are times when I feel like simply giving up on the goatheads, but that would just mean way more of 'em on my property. I'm gonna take a break tomorrow, since I pulled several hundred weeds today (and scuffed out 100 or more young vines with my Vibram soles). These goatheads are something else, I've never seen the like... o_O

However, each vine I pull that is loaded with goatheads means that many less on the property: it's the only way to look at the problem, and I reckon my hard work will pay off next season when there are far less miserable goathead vines on my property. Just gotta keep interrupting the life cycle of the weed, and pray for early frosts, lol. ;)

Today, I finally found some okra on my plants, not many but a few. I was looking at my indoor turnips, they seem to grow very consistently in a container and require little soil ~6" I am wondering in a SHTF event if turnips could replace potatoes in my diet. I have tomatoes that need canning and beans that need picking. the lettuce is doing well. I have 3 beds with tops ready for winter growing now so I need to plan around them. I have half of the wood I need to build my walkout into a growing station and have the metal shelves on hand. My additional water barrels have been shipped and I am looking forward towards fall, I am anxious to see how the sweet potatoes did.

My first planting of fall spinach are up and that is a very good thing....

Funny lookin Christmas tree you got there 😂

Just picked 9 cukes off one plant!
My second planting of beans are looking great and blooming so I'm hoping for beans before cold weather.
Also finally beginning to get some tomatoes.
I have a friend looking for zukes. Doesn't that sound nuts? Bugs got mine - same with theirs.
Everything is so late!

What zone are you in? I have not ever planted winter onions and you have peaked my interest
Hi - google tells me I'm in zone 8-9. Our last 'bad' winter was a few years ago. -5c would be the lowest unless something strange is going on.
I planted the onions in the polytunnel, though I leave my leeks out all winter, and cabbage.

I got my additional rain barrels installed yesterday and we have gotten just over an inch of rain... It used to be that an inch of rain would have my barrels over flowing, but as I increased the rain barrels I have done nothing to increase the size of my collection field, and now the 1" of rain only filled my barrels 1/3 full. As my gardening area has grown and my demand for water has increased, I did not consider that the volume of water that I can have available is dependent on three things; the size of the storage system, the size of the collection array, and the weekly rainfall we get.

The next steps I face are:
I will need to figure out how I can increase my collection array and;
how to increase the delivery system lines to carry the extra water from the collection system to the barrels.

But at the end of the day, it is now clear that my ability to collect water for the garden will be limited to about 500 gallons per week.
