Depends on where in Alabama. The Black Belt, which includes Montgomery, certainly has a real Southern Accent.Alabama has or had the purest representation of the southern accent, very distinct from the rest of the South in my opinion.

well that explains a lot!We actually talk the way they used to.
However, it is WE who don't spell properly. But, there is a reason.
When we started using print media, items cost by the letter. So, we shortened words that used extraneous vowels, etc. Colour became color, shoppe became shop, etc.
