True story... San Tropez France… French Rivera. While in the Navy… we were anchored in the bay, winter. Buddies and I had dinner in town, stayed for drinks.

A strong winter storm was coming in so we headed for the docks to catch the shuttle boat out to the ship. The shuttle had stopped running because of the storm. We were stranded, no hotels were open (off season), no where to go, no shelter from the storm.

So we had to ride it out, no choice, two buddies and I opened a newspaper box with change but took all the newspapers. We spent the night in a phone booth bundled up in the stolen newspapers. It was actually quite warm but a bit cramped.

During the night the ship drug anchor because of the severe winds. The anchor cut the major phone line that fed the entire Rivera. The French government wasn’t happy with the US Navy that next morning along with anyone else who had a landline. But the shuttle started running at daylight, we made it out to the ship before breakfast with a story to tell.
