Clem is making it complicated. CupCAKE is required to be sweet. Muffin can be whatever it wants to be. Back when the world was young, I was known as a stud-muffin, but that's another story.
Hmm. I dunno. You can have savoury cupcakes. Or savoury cakes. Not a fan, but I know that's a thing.

What's savoury to you?
To me, when it comes to cakes or other desserts usually sweet, savoury means salty, as opposed to sweet.
Friends don't make friends eat muffins. ☹

Savoury mean not sweet & can be salty, but it can be anything not sweet also.
Unless you are Chinese, then it is sweet, sour, bitter or savoury / spicy.

Muffins are healthier or so the baker says.
Of course.
So are carrots and celery, and I ain't eating those either.
When I was being created, I picked human over rabbit because we have good stuff to eat:p.
And if you are diabetic, at least with cupcakes you will have a good "last meal".

Ever since Hostess went bankrupt and was bought by some other company they are not even close to what they used to be.
Everything is smaller and I have yet to find something that has any taste close to the original Hostess.
I like cupcakes and muffins as long as they are banana or blueberry.
The proper way to eat a cupcake is to cut it in half and put the bottom on the top with the icing sandwiched between.

My wife makes a creme filled chocolate cupcake that is almost identical to the Pre-90's Hostess Cupcakes.

She uses a butter creme frosting, but plans to try a ganache topping with a white icing in the future. I told her to do the white icing in cursive C's along the center, so they even look the part (her first initial is C).

When I was in the 6th grade, back in the early 60s, we went on a class field trip to the Hostess factory. The only thing I remember was this great big black guy wearing a black rubber apron from his neck to his feet, black rubber boots, and black rubber gloves to his armpits. He was standing on a platform and big tubs of dough would move on a chain to him and he would tip the tub down and scrape the dough between his feet into a shoot so it could go to the fill line. He was sweating profusely and all the sweat was dripping into the dough. They gave us all cupcakes and nobody ate them.
