On my second cruise, we made a Christmas tree out of bubble wrap and plastic covers for electronic connectors. At the end of the cruise, we were cleaning and found a tree with all the decorations in a box behind a workbench. Christmas at sea sucks. Stood in line for 4 hours for Christmas dinner.
I didn't even know until I saw that picture that the USMC had (and still has) a cavalry unit. And all of them seem to be noncoms, but I only found a couple pics where they had a sword.
a friend of mine was in the marines and in one of his eastern ports of call he bought a sword. Back on the ship word got out and he was called into the commanders office. The sword was confiscated and he was told that if he wanted it back he would have to go to officers school. He never did get that sword back and he never bought another one. Fast learner that one...
As a former Marine NCO myself:
He has a Marine NCO sword, NOT an officers sword. The Marine NCO sword is still used but only for drill and ceremonial occasions.
The Marine Officer sword (Mameluke) is completely different.
