Or does it need to be stealth? Carry rifle in hand.
Stealth is a plus. The big thing is not drawing any attention.

Once upon a time......survivalism forums had discussions about how to carry a long gun covertly.....for those in between times when a long gun is a good thing to have.....but you may not want everyone to know you are carrying a long gun. But, like me, you aren't in Alaska.
No, I'm in pure suburbia. But, like me, you aren't in Alaska.
The two I have are a Gunslinger II and a G4 Operator.Eberlestock makes several larger packs that have this scabbard built-in.
The first one I bought just says "GUNRUNNER". The second one says "H2 GUNRUNNER". They look exactly the same other than the camo pattern. The fabric is slightly different also. But the size and features seem the exact same. The two I have are a Gunslinger II
.....or perhaps just carry the pack in any situations in which carrying a guitar case would look odd.
I understand a bit better. It's going to have to be a smaller gun- I'd go with a takedown rifle of sorts (or at least a folding stock so the butt doesn't stick outa the top) anyways cause the scabbard bottom is a bit of a giveaway- many of the pdw type guns we discussed on that thread a while ago can fit in any pack.O.K. Not imagine the day hunter wants to "not" appear as a hunter. Said differently wants to be a "GRAYMAN" hunter. Hell, maybe the hunting season is not even open. Maybe he desires to appear to be a Land Surveyor, putting some shortened bright red tipped survey stakes, complete with red ribbon flowing sticking out of the scabbard.
I wanted a smallish backpack for walking to the Cluster Box to fetch the mail and packages. I already have dozens of those. But I wanted a hidden Scabbard, that would offer instant & totally open access to a long gun, and I wanted it to "NOT" offer the slightest hint about the existence of the scabbard to any observer.
So what I am understanding is @Sourdough wants to trek to his mail box with a rifle and not look suspicious. He wants to be stealthy. He evidently thinks the person below would not draw any attention to a passerby that sees him pulling US mail out of a box on the roadside.Stealth is a plus. Looks completely normal to me.

That makes sense now. Quite a few years ago I bought a Winchester 1894 Trapper in .357 mag with a 16" barrel. I always intended to carry it in a back pack, similar to the one your looking at for when I go fishing or trapping in remote areas. $200 for a quality pack seems pretty reasonable to me.YES..........and I do. But a pistol is not intended/designed for several types of encounters. Most preppers filter prepping decisions through the "EASY" filter.
I constantly run "what if" thoughts. I actually enjoy doing that. So even wearing a pistol, I am constantly considering, "Am I wearing the proper pistol for what I am at that moment doing". The "monsters" that I regularly encounter have more than two legs.
I often wear my ".475 LINEBAUGH" and still feel concerns about its limitations.
i wish i was rich...i would have a bolt action rifle made...center fire....probably single shot.......4-4.5# with 16.5 inch barrel...if a beast like that could be built...probably 256 win mag or a 223-6mm wildcat.
