There are places in rural Mississippi like that sadly. They had it on the news. Hell, some of it is even suburban Mississippi in poor neighborhoods. State & city govt won't spring for sewage systems & apparently septic tank systems are extremely expensive.
I wonder if the state or national government doesn't have some impact on these things. My home town in South Dakota needed storm cellars built. Evidently they had never had them and there was a guideline that came down that they had to. They were given a deadline to have them built or they were going to lose some funding of some sort. These are details I don't know about. Hometown has a big celebration in June every 5 years with a parade, and many events. In 2015, when the hometown celebration was supposed to happen, the main street, where the parade always was, was torn up so bad that there was no way to have a parade there. It was one time that the second main street served the town. Second main street had been there, probably before the street that was where the highway went through, so it was more main than the other. Hometown now has storm cellars on the main drag. I wonder why this kind of thing isn't true for Mississippi and others? Surely withholding funding of some sort could get their butts in gear.

Get it shoes or boots...

That reminded me of...

Edit: forgot to add

Ben

I figured it out! I figured out what was bothering her. I usually take a gallon jug of water and my own water bowl, but because it was so cold yesterday, I knew the water would freeze in the bowl, and I figured that she would be fine for 45 minutes, or less. She was talking to me about the water dish and water! She in particular doesn't drink much water and because it was so cold, I didn't think that would be a problem. I'll be taking water and the dish today!

MT, I'm glad to see the little one enjoying the cows. I was the same way with animals. My dad loved animals and living on a farm and spending time with the animals was probably one of my happiest memories. I loved it. Its a great experience for children. As an aside, when we had week long sort of field trips at my school in Singapore (they called it "Interim Semester" where we would all go do different things arranged by the school) I chose to do an internship at the local zoo. I was the only one of the kids there who had ever picked up a rake or shovel and had to clean up after livestock. The zookeepers were shocked because they were used to dealing with spoiled rich kids who had maids and never cleaned anything. I told them I grew up on a farm and had cows, horses, ducks, chickens, goats, pigs, etc.

HB, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma. If she passes tonight I hope it will be peaceful and painless.
My dad's mom died sometime in the 1980s so I don't remember much about her. My mom's father died in 96 and her mother died in 2001.
This is an old photo of my maternal grandparents.

The lady seated in front far left was my pseudo grandmother. She and her husband sort of adopted my family when we moved here. She passed last year.

To add a light moment to the mood, I love these pics of one of my FB friends living her best life and embarrassing her kid who apparently didn't appreciate her fabulousness.

My Grandma, it doesn’t look like she will make it through the night. She lived a great long life. My dad and his brother got to sit with her for awhile this evening. I pray god welcomes her with open arms.

I missed your post yesterday☹️, beautiful photos of a beautiful lady!! God waited a long time to call her home!💗

Was sorting old photos today and found these. The tunnels!!

Long ago friends and I would “party” at this place, sometimes camp overnight (70's). Hard to get to, over 1/2 mile of steep trail into this canyon.

An old railroad ran down this canyon decades earlier. The rails were gone, a couple of the bridges were intact. Someone planked them over and added hand rails. 5 long tunnels were still there. The longest about 300yds. Standing in the middle of it... so dark I couldn't see my hands but could see the little circle of light at the ends.

It was a great place! We brought our own music, banjos, guitars, etc. Best part, there was no one to complain about the noise. And no cop would ever walk into that canyon at night. It was a lot easier to climb out than walk down. If it rained we just moved our fire into a tunnel. Plenty of drift wood by the creek for the taking.

I heard a few years ago that a coal company bought land and blocked all access to the canyon. Shame, I'd like to see this place again.
