I'm self taught too. . . :). Kinda guessed as I went along, but I'm getting braver and branching out a little more with each one I've done now. I'm now on number 5. . . don't think I can branch out too much further but hoping my technique does improve. I found a nice short cut to making the flying geese and half blocks which is making the sewing/cutting go a lot faster which is nice.

I have a pattern that uses reverse templates (if that is the right term, you sew the pieces to a pattern) which is all new to me, scared, but I have to try, wish me luck!

This is the newest granddaughter quilt. At this point the front and back had not been sewn together but are now. I just need to do a little hand stitching to close and then machine see around the boarder. It's hard to get a good picture since the colors are subtle and it doesn't seem to want to focus but it is done with pink & blue stars and gray.

Very pretty! Our techniques are so different, I work from the center out, then trim and close last...I am always afraid that I will end up with lumps or pulls! Kudos to you, it will be wonderful.

My friend who recently passed had a quilting frame that hung from the ceiling. When her mom and I were sitting around the table talking she said that she had wanted me to get it cause she knew it would be used. I'm not holding my breathe. Her family has been thru so much right now with her passing, Harvey and sons home was flooded, they now have the two grandkids at their home. Seems like it just been one heartache after another for them. I already have a request for another one, but it will be for a baby blanket, so much smaller. I have learned to enjoy do them. Kinda relaxing. :)
Better than watching the **** tube. I have been weaning myself off technology, you know TV and Fb, So I have found myself more content. I have been reading and I am a rug hooker. I have lots of fabric for a quilt and will someday start on one, but I am looking for a good quilt frame at some point. I like to do so many things it is hard to stick with a long term project.

Sewing needles are a good barter item. I remember reading a story about a woman crossing the Mason Dixon going south, being stopped by soldiers and finding she had hundreds of needles pinned to her hoop.

I like a pvc pipe frame the best! I bought mine, but I would think you could make it for cheap yourself. Let me know if you want pictures. Simple, and very functional

Yeah, I'm really not a tv watcher and I rarely go on fb. Just when I get a notice that one of the kids added a photo which means it's probably one of the granddaughters. Then I go on to see that 1 posting. I honestly don't have enough time in my day to care about if someone went to McDonald's to go eat lunch. TV I will have on while I am cleaning or sewing. . . I have to be doing something though. Can't just sit to watch.

do you latch hook rugs or the crochet kinds? I have done 1 latch hook in my lifetime as a kid. It was of a puppy dog but I have no idea what ever happened to it. I would like to do a rug one day though.

I do the old fashion way of hooking rugs, by using 100% wool cloth, cut in strips, and pull up through linen with a hook. It is not latch hook.

I have my fabric and pattern. I just don't have time. I like the civil war legacies patterns. Love those earthy colors. I thought I would start on it last winter but then got started on a rug, then now I am going to an auction this weekend that lady had tons of sewing stuff and wool. so we will see what kind of goodies I bring home. I am way too busy in summer to do much, what with mowing the fields, working on the vintage camper, and a thousand other tasks. Including prepping stuff.

I like that! I totally understand about how busy life can be. . . I started this baby quilt back in April knowing what life is like during the spring/ summer months. Heck I dropped a day at work each week for the last month just to get everything done. If I didn't have a dead line, I wouldn't have stressed so bad.month

Ill have to check into the how tos of hooking rugs. It looks like something else I would like to try my hand at.

I like the switching colors and I have dyed my own fabric which really gives you a lot of creative license. I make my own patterns, I find something I like and make it my own. Luckily I have the ability to hand copy a pattern I like to a larger piece of fabric. It is nice to just create anything I want. I did one of my home and a running rabbit. I could do one of my dog if I wanted. I tried primitive painting, did one that wasn't too bad and realized I don't have the right paints, really need oils. My project this weekend is selling on ebay and stringing up some love beads. Depending what I come home with tomorrow I may end up doing more crochet, I have an idea. And I am thinking of doing some God's eyes too. "My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives."

I reread your post. You mean crochet? What's a crotch rug? Sounds kind of obscene, surely a typo.
Went to the auction yesterday and nearly melted. Got some wool, half of it worsted, yuck, can't use that for hooking, so maybe I will braid it. but in any case I did manage to come home with something. Unfortunately someone else had a bigger pocketbook than I and got all the good stuff.

OMGoodness darn auto thingy changes words I swear! I will have to do back and edit that. Thank you for pointing out. There is no way I would intentionally write a sentence using the word.

And a "big" one at that. . .. I deleted that part and changed to the correct word Good thing the guys don't read this thread! Thank you for haven my back girl!!

This quilt top now has a backing and been quilted since this picture was taken. Hunny actually bought me a new sewing machine since I was having so many problems with my old one that I've had since high school graduation. My tension was not holding anymore and I could only see about an inch before I had to stop and readjust it again. To take it in for servicing was about $60 and my machine new would have only been $80 for the basic model. Joanns was having a sale and I was at my last straw. I did end up buying a free motion presser foot which makes quilting so much easier. I just need a little more practice with controlling it but so worth the extra money. So my next quilt has been cut out and just started piecing it together. I'm using the same design just doing the next one in cranberry and tan instead of the navy and white. The blue will go to youngest son for Christmas and the cranberry colored to my mon. Anyway, this is keeping me busy trying to get them both done before Christmas. Then I will be making a Katya super hero costume for oldest granddaughter. Don't worry if you have never heard of her. . . I had to 'Bing' her to see what her outfit was.

You make some beautiful quilts. I have friends who do quilting but I have only ever made small ones for babies. That looks like it took a lot of work. Love the results. And yayyy! for new sewing machines. I don't know if they hold up as long as the older models but they sure have some cool features.

Actually the navy and white went quick since the squares are 18 inches. It only took me a couple days to piece it together. And I know a couple shortcuts that helps a lot too. You would be surprised at how quick it goes really.

Here is one block of 9 in my new quilt I am working on...

Very nice! Are you doing it all by hand again? Curves have always scared me but your look pretty darn perfect;). Are you doing different blocks or the same pattern? Honestly with the purples it reminds me of a glowing cross with Sun beam coming from behind.

I piece it with a sewing machine, but I will be doing the quilting by hand. This is a pattern I found online...all the blocks will be the same, colors and everything. The curves were actually fun but the lengths were hard to predict, some were right on and some were short. I had to adjust for that when I squared each piece. It was the first time I did curves (google was very helpful) as well as the first time I have used paper foundations. Keep your fingers crossed ... I should have the rest of the blocks done fairly soon and we will see how it really looks!
