The butchers do the smoking if ye want, but most is just dried, just keep in a cool dry place, can last for 6 months to a year but it will be as hard as a rock, in our home we gobble a good size batch within 2 weeks

Nothing beats firewood, but it is a choir for sure. I'm cutting rounds and leaving them in the field this year as fuel on demand. An axe = no attention compared to a chainsaw, best to get the noisy part done while it's acceptable.

I built a small solar system on a 4x8 trailer that is easily multi use, a 4 panel supply from harbor freight , 3 solar agm batteries and a 3000 watt inverter. I ended up with about $1000.00 bucks in it but I can run my essentials off of in in a time of need.
The way I look at it, a EMP and CME doesn't affect wood stoves. Batteries have a shelf life and would require the sun and/or a generator to keep the batteries charged. It would require a substantial solar system that provides power for heat and power for cooking appliances.

No doubt, solar has limits Unless you have an unlimited budget. The batteries I just spent 2k on will last 5 yrs at best and need to be replaced. There are better options even now but they are much pricier. I’m hoping there will be an advance before I need new ones. Tesla is talking about a million mile battery for their cars now. I can’t wait to hear more details on it. It shouldn’t be too long though. Cars are just now starting to convert away from fossil fuels and will continue to do so. Just like the model T, the technology will Get better each year.

If you really want old school look up Lehman's. They sell to the Amish who don't believe in electricity. There catalogs are mind blowing when it comes to people power.
They have been my favorite for years for manual tools and such. Was raised near a large population of Amish.

If by "school" you mean "Amish" they are a religious group that are somewhat hard to describe, LOL. Theoretically they don't believe in using electricity or internal combustion engines. So they use horse and buggy, non-electric tools, etc. But actually they do use some electricity as you can tell by the headlights on the buggy below.
They are prepared for the apocalypse for the most part. Except they are pacifists, so I don't know how long they will survive without rule of law protecting them.
They often have a very good working relationship with the prepper community since they have many common interests, so I suspect some preppers may step in and protect them even if they don't want them to.
Mennonites are related but most Mennonites use electricity and drive cars.

Ive known plenty of Amish men who smoke a pipe. None that I knew drank...at least not in front of me.

I advise everyone to buy disposable aluminum dishes for tourism in the forest.
It is made of thick aluminum foil.
You can do everything in it: boil water, cook food.
Very inexpensive. 1.5 usd for 5 dishes

We use foil out here quite a bit, we take pan fish, spice it up, pore lemon juice over it, roll it maple leafs, wrap it foil, cover with ash in the pit then bury it under hot coals in the pit. It comes out with a light savory flavor.
A bit of detail .... First, this is not for those who are OCD concerning laundry ( like my sisters in law who each run four massive loads a day), or those with large families. Small loads are ideal. For really grimy clothing, pre soaking, and perhaps a bit of scrubbing will be required. We load at night to pre soak, then drain and wash in the morning, and get good results. Two rinses are also required, followed by hand wringing. Overall, we're using about 1.5 gallons of water per load, sometimes two. The amount of detergent averages out to 2 tbs per load (1 oz, or about 15 cents per load). Thus, we're able to recycle used water to the gardens. One of the weak areas of this washer is it's cradle, but, that's an easy fix. Overall, for us, well worth the shekals....
