Enjoying a nice cup of coffee with honey and cinnamon!
When I was in college in South Dakota, this was a thing for the drinkers this time of year. I was still trying to drink and before I realized it just made me really sick. I could never get past a taste or two of Tom and Jerry's.The lady is making something today called "Tom & Jerry" batter. It's sounds like it's eggs, powdered sugar, butter, cinnamon and nutmeg and ends up as thick as ice cream. You add a scoop of it to hot water then pour in 2oz of dark rum. I am being told it's like hot eggnog with a kick.
Recipe in above post and again here.Somewhere I have a Tom & Jerry punch bowl with cups. I always wondered what the drink was like.
Same as then, just stouter.Mocha+extra chocolate and spiced rum over ice for tonight, for now brisk iced tea with lemon.

Tom & Jerry (the drink)
First prepare a batter, using a mixing bowl. Separate the yolk and white of one egg, beating each separately and thoroughly. Then combine both, adding enough superfine powedered sugar to stiffen. Add to this one pinch of baking soda and 1/4 oz. rum to preserve the batter. Then add a little more sugar to stiffen.
To serve, use a hot mug, 1 tablespoon of the batter dissolved in 3 tablespoons hot milk. Add 1 1/2 ounce rum. Fill the mug with hot milk within 1/4 inch of the top of the mug and stir. Add 1/2 ounce brandy and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top.
Thank you. We used to have a large batch of it back in the day, but I do not remember the butter. I do remember hot buttered rum being a winter beverage though. That's similar to what she made. This is her recipe:
Ingredients:
- 12 large eggs, separated and room temperature
- 1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 3 pounds confectioners’ sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
Instructions:
- Prepare the Batter: Beat egg whites and salt until stiff peaks form. Fold in 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar. In a separate bowl, beat egg yolks until thick and light-colored. Stir in marshmallow cream (not included in the original recipe, but a common addition). Fold egg white mixture into egg yolk mixture.
- Add Butter: Gradually add softened butter to the batter, beating until fully incorporated.
- Assemble the Drink: Spoon 2-3 heaping tablespoons of batter into a large mug. Add 2 ounce of rum (or brandy). Pour in boiling water to fill the mug 3/4 full. The batter will rise to the top. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
