It is sad that a dog gets put down when it is out of control. I understand it, but it is sad to me. There is something about the spirit of dogs that gets to me. Our dog killed our rabbits when I was a child. I see dogs with behavior issues every day. When I was a kid, dogs ran wild, but knew where home was, where they got fed and watered. The sheriff dealt with dogs that were out of control, and we all knew what that meant.
If you want your dogs safe and care about them, contain them!

Thanks for explaining, @Peanut. Around here goldenseal is also called yellow root, so that's what I thought you were talking about - and we don't see goldenseal until early April or so - so I was curious.

But I do understand what you mean about those close to nature watching the signs. I still have a lot to learn in that area, but it makes a better calendar. :)

@goshengirl Signs... I found this I posted from an old thread about winter.
------------------------------
I saw my first woolly worm this winter! From the Foxfire #1 book... The Woolly Worm tells of a bad winter if:

1) he has a heavy coat
2) the black band is wide (the more black than brown he is, and/or the wider the back stripe, the worse the winter)
3) if you see him crawling before the first frost

-------------------------------------------------
I saw 4 this past fall..
Heavy coat.. yes
Black band is wide.. They were completely black, no orange/brown
Before frost.. yes (except the one I found frozen)

I guess the wolly bears were right.

Plants are all over the map as to when they start growing. Some seed might lay dormant several years. Some start the same time every year regardless of weather, others only in specific weather conditions. Books are handy for this. I usually have a plant book within reach.

@Peanut - yes! I saw a number of all-black woolies this past year, too! (Wooly worms and persimmon seeds are our forecasters!) Although to be honest, it hasn't been a really hard winter (to my thinking). But we don't have a decent firewood supply, so maybe the woolies were talking to me directly, rather than giving an indication overall. 😂

Today is starting out nice, head is clear and it just feels good not to hurt. Yesterday's weather front has rolled past, the snow was nice as it cleans the air.

Yesterday afternoon, Mrs. UH helped a friend with preparing a meal for a couple who has very strict diet restrictions. The wife had mouth/jaw re-construction so she cannot chew and the husband is on a low salt no sugar diet. Our friend (who does not cook) volunteered to feed the couple before realizing what she had gotten into. The wife turned to one of our quick meals, chicken noodle soup, that has the broth and noodles in separate jars, they puréed the broth and put it in another container (the wife does not give out canning jars...) Then she taught the lady how to prepare and cook plain sweet potatoes, the wife does not like the candied kind. I was amazed at my wife, barely able to stand at the island with her oxygen mask and her IV bag trying to teach someone how to cook a little something....

This is just to all the GUYS out there, today is Feb 14, sometimes referred to as Valentine's day, if you have a significant other today is a day that you should let her know how special she is... AND I KNOW SHE IS SPECIAL because she puts up with the LIKES OF US!

This week is gonna be a total wipe out.
Leaving shortly to go visit wife's brother and sister in TN. 2 hours each way. Uuugghh.

Off tomorrow, then Wednesday Cardiologist in big town ...all day .
Then Thursday VA vision care for biannual eye check 1 1/2 hr each way to Marion IL.

Then Friday, back to big town to see VA primary care ,for 4 month visit.

Can I just go to sleep and wake up next week 🤔

Y'all have a great day.

Jim

You need an amish keurig machine, Pearl, then you won't forget your cup.
Happy Valentines day to all. Not sure what we're doing today, except I need to track down the head nurse where mom lives, and look into adding services for her. I did get a few boxes of junk that was in her room out of there and sorted for the thrift store. Would like to do a few more. There is a valentines party at the place she lives at 2, so maybe I can time it all right so I can remind her to go.

I had a dog that kept killin neighbors chickens. I had to shoot it. Seems like once a dog starts killin like that it's nearly impossible to break the habit.
We had an adorable sheltie dachshund mix that was my son's pet, but after strike 2 where we had confirmation it was her killing our chickens we put her down.

Seems like once they get "the taste" for blood, there's no training it out of them and I'd have hated it to have been a neighbor's pet or child next!

Wow, you folks have had a big weekend! I've only been missing for 3 days. Helping a friend and then most of the day yesterday was Church and Church dinner related.

Already have laundry started.
Will walk and walk dogs.
Never heard back from City Hall, so have to go deal with them about the double bill.
Soak beans tonight to cook tomorrow.
May start some Muscadine seeds inside. Not sure what I'm doing so that will involve research.
I'm sure there is more.

Guys ,it can be done, but not very pleasantly.
Take the chicken it killed, make sure the dog knows its the one he killed, tie it around his neck until it rots off.
He won't ever look at a chicken again.

Well, it's Monday! I knew the second I noticed I forgot to put my coffee cup under the Keurig! Caught some of it, what a mess!😯😀
Haha I did that a month or so ago before I went to work. Was still asleep at 4 am I guess when I got up. Now I just get coffee at work, at least the mess won’t be in my camper lol

I just got done not watching the Super Bowl. What i am going to watch, is the insides of my eyelids. Gotta be up at quarter to three for work, and then drive to Albequerque to fly home tomorrow. It's time to go home...
Safe travels.
I didn’t watch it either, was still in the gym and then made the 3 hour trek home while my daughter slept the whole way. 😆
Ah to be 19 again.

& @Pearl "contain them"
I see ill mannered dogs as a reflection of their owners just like ill mannered children. A dog doesn't need to be contained - just trained.

We tried that one time, pretty soon the dog had two feet dangling around his neck - ate the bird to get it off.

I had a dog that would go to great lengths to get chicken even if I soaked it in hot sauce. (I was told that hot sauce would stop the dog)
I took the dead chicken tied it around the dogs neck and left it there. After two weeks I removed the chicken and he never wanted chicken again. He would not get into the garbage either.

I smacked my GSD with the first chicken she killed when we moved here and she never ever did it again ( I didn't hurt her but she is a very smart dog that does not want to get in trouble) .

It's very cold here today and we had our first lambs yesterday. 2 nice big live ones, one dead , found them in the morning. But the stupid ewe rejected one. She did the same last year. We gave her another chance because it was her first time. This year she might be going to the auction. So now I have a house guest once again. She is in a large dog crate until the weather improves. Then she goes back to the barn with the other sheep.

Yeah, but most people just kick them out the door and think the dog is going to stay around their yard. A fenced in yard is the safest place if they are not kept in the house.

I don’t believe animals have Spirits.

I do. Plus our dogs are smarter than the average retarded human. I think our goats are actually smarter too
One of our livestock dogs hides his food ( for later) if he is done eating. He pushes his bowl in a corner and puts straw or hay on top. If we feed grain to the goats when I trim hoofs once they will remember the location and try to get in the very next day, even if they have only been there once. We just noticed that after doing the little boys hoofs. One goat slipped on a patch of ice near the barn, and now makes a big circle around that area.
Animals will also grieve when they lose a baby, well, except our stupid sheep who only want to have one lamb. These just a few things

Dogs are real smart, some are just hardheaded. My Doberman only had to poop in the house once and he understood that wasn't a good thing to do, and we didn't use any physical punishment to teach him. He was real sensitive to harsh words.

When I was a kid an English Shepherd got left behind by the white trash neighbors on the next farm over. My dad is a softy for dogs and took him in. He never could learn no matter what. That hard-headed mutt got run over by two cars, a pickup, and a school bus and still chased cars. I don't know how he even lived through it all. He got shot in the butt once too and lived through that. Tough as nails, but hard headed as hell...

About to get busy here! Hot, Hot, Hot! I got the firebreaks plowed Saturday. Just called and got the burn permit number from the state forestry commission. It's sunny, beautiful, no wind and the humidity is the lowest I've seen all winter... 24%.

Just waiting for my uncle to get here with his gear. He has a state license to do controlled burns.

Going to try to burn about 12 acres. Should have some pics to post this evening. Assuming half the county isn't on fire and I'm not under arrest (or a crispy critter on a slab).

Being a Detroit fan I didn't care about anything other than Matthew Strafford proving it was not him. I made a shirt to wear to the neighbors last night.
