A man stopped at the house this morning looking for his donkey (neighbor up the road a few miles). It was his jack that was out the other day. Now it makes sense, he’d just bought the jack. His granddaughter left a gate open and it was trying to go home.
This guy tried to buy my horse a few years ago but I’d forgotten about it. He asked again today so I sold him my horse and donkey together. Didn’t want to do it, but it was the best thing for my boys. I got both of them the same spring. The horse was a 3-day old foal, the donkey about month old. They are my buddies, pocket pests but I haven’t ridden since I got hurt by a bull. They’re not worth anything, just scrubs.
My options were few, unless I found them a good home they probably ended up at the Beaverton auction where they’d have been sold for meat (shipped to mexico). This guy has a government job, is always working extra odd jobs. A hard working man, not a dead beat or druggy. I once had him pressure wash all the windows here (2 story).
Best part, they’ll be only 5 miles away. I drive by the pasture every few days so I can stop and see them if I wish. I do noooot want to do this but my obligations here are changing rapidly. I don’t have time for them now and my time will becomes shorter as the months pass. My cousin is running the farm now and he’s not overly fond of equines and has no use for them. He’d have never asked me to get rid of them but doing so makes his life simpler.
It’s time, my neighbor will be here with a trailer tomorrow afternoon. And I couldn’t ask for a better home by my buddies, in spite of the wayward jack. (I can get high quality hay cheap. I’ll take them a couple rolls come fall, make sure they are well fed through the winter.)
Gonna miss them following me around the farm, but my farming days are over...
