Made it up to The Ridge to thin out the garlic as planned.
Each of those clumps is about 10-15 garlic plants.

View attachment 61196

I thinned out 2/3 of the huegelculture and left the rest in its narural state with hope that they will someday squeeze out weeds.

Bumner picture is too large!

I also planted 5 types of pumpkins. Wildlife has previously devestated the fruits but I hope they well good ground cover to help inhibit the Multiflora rose.

Tomorrow more of the remodel work.

Neb ol' buddy, ol' friend, ol' pal . . . wink wink 😂

I have a patch of elephant garlic in the lower field, about 10X30 feet that's been there for at least 20 years, I really need to dig up as much as I can and plant it elsewhere, the clumps are just too tight to produce cloves. The best garlic is growing just below a maple tree on a short bank just above the septic tank, it's sandy there and garlic has started from old dried out cloves I threw over the bank, some of the garlic heads are around 1 pound. Elephant garlic doesn't taste all that good when it's raw, but dried out in a dehydrator and ground up it makes excellent garlic powder, also when the flower heads start to come up they are like asparagus when steamed or lightly boiled.
Viking - have you ever tried roasting them. They make garlic roasters and elephant garlic is awesome like that. Just cut the top of the whole head off, drizzle it with a good olive oil and sprinkle with salt then roast it. Use those little pickle forks to pull out cloves and pop in your mouth. Be careful, they're hot! They don't have a real garlicy flavor, not sure how to explain - just delicious.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a good day for planting root crops so will be putting more cloves in the ground. I have some that are about 2" - 4" tall. And then I wait :)

We sell all the eggs we don't need and could sell more for $4 a dozen at the farmers market. Chickens are awesome. But why just Barred Rocks? I would get different breeds so you get different colored eggs :) I like the green ones
Wish you lived anywhere near me - I would buy your extra eggs. I am paying $5+ per doz for home grown eggs here and they aren't very big. I used to get a different breed each year so I could keep track of how old they were.

After work we went to Tractor supply to check out the chicken doey the wife was interested in. For what it is it seemed pretty well made. 1/4" hardware cloth for the wire. Decent wood construction. But they had none in stock other than the one on display and they wouldn't sale it. Just order it on line. Had Mexican after that.

When I was still working I used to bring in braids of garlic in as gifts and they well recieved. The Princess would do the same. One guy loved them roasted. Another told me he was still growing garlic I had gifted him when I retired.

I like garlic in all forms including raw cloves.

Like a good stinky cigar, they are good for crowd control.

I made this one for $42 in 1 day (I think.) Not sure if that's the sort of thing she's after.

I've never worked with someone that cool!

Yesterday I called Chewy to stop some auto-delivery of meds for our dog that we had to put down on Monday. They refunded the last 3 deliveries and credited my CC for the full $350. They told me I can either donate the meds to a shelter or just throw them away. Today we received a bouquet of flowers and a very nice note from Chewy.
There aren't very many companies like that anymore.
On top of all that, they were saving me almost $100 a month compared to what the Vet charged. The vet is who recommended Chewy.
If any of you use this med let me know.

When @ThePrincess retires (76 days from) now we have talked about building a chicken tractor that would fit over my raised beds.

Side story

I had wondered why my raised bed gardens did so well without adding much of anything to ammend the soil. Then I eventually noticed the garden boxes were under a phone line that was a favorite roost for birds.

Don't you love it when you accidentally do something right?

When I finally get back to gardening I plan to put in pole at the ends of my huegelcultures and string a line above the boxes for the feathered freinds.

Just thinking here - haven't seen @Double R
Oh you hoo @Double R where are you?
Buried under a pile of canning jars? @Double R
Did @Double R can herself into a corner?

If I say @Double R enough times, think she'll notice :)

:huggs:
I did notice! Lol!
I’ve just been hanging in the shadows lately. Definitely buried under glorious canning jars. Full and empty. More full by the day. Having so much fun filling them. Parents are sure enjoying the adventures as well. So far picky pop has actually loved everything we’ve sent over to stock their shelves. We still can’t believe it. Really excited about the garden this year. Won’t be giving all the extra away but putting it on the shelves. Ours and the folks. Absolutely 100% addicted. Plus love doing it with hubby. Good quality time.
Thanks for thinking of me :huggs:Hope your doing great!

Well, the girls dressed up some of the flock for the special occasion. I offered some Irish Whiskey but the birds weren't interested.

Happy St Patrick's Day
Gus.GusTheGoose@instagram is his social media page for the life and times of Gus The Goose. And one of his ducks.
The girls thought the birds needed a little Irish cheer.

This is the one wife has picked out. We've looked at a bunch. This one is the most well made I've seen yet. I just don't have time right now to build one. I do like the look of yours.

We were just talking with a 'step-nephew' and his fiancé and my BIL about the flavors of the home canned vs. the store canned veggies. I think corn is the biggest difference. Home canned actually tastes like corn! Glad picky pops is liking it too. Be careful - you'll be canning for the whole neighborhood :)

Not to spoil the fun but green is used by Catholics and Orange by Protestants.
I thought I would bring it up since wars were fought over it.
Interesting. I think I heard that before. But, I am neither and judging by the fact they are playing in the yard every Sunday I suspect the same goes for Gus The Goose, and his duck. dancing chicken

When I worked for the local school district the superintendent seem to love having meetings, I got so tired of them I'd bring garlic cloves to chew on, didn't seem to make any difference, all it would do is waste our work time. Elephant garlic has what are called bubblets that grow on the outside of the bulb, I think I've seen them in jars of pickles, anyway those would get thrown over the bank and four years later there would be large bulbs form from them. Elephant garlic is probably one of the toughest garlics, they can grow in pretty poor ground, my patch is growing in some really hard soil, almost like hardpan.

I am shocked at the flavor difference. I just expected it to be like store bought canned goods. I don’t think I can go back. Definitely can’t wait till our corn is ready to harvest. So excited to try that. Even simple stuff like stew is unreal. I never thought my husband would say no more stew in the freezer. It’s a go to for him. He now only wants in a jar which is great for me because it does taste so much better to me but also frees up sooooooo much freezer space. I just spent weeks making beef stock and canning it clearing out saved bones and short ribs we hadn’t gotten to in prep for the beef heading to the locker. Made a few batches of stew with some to clear out stew meat we hadn’t used. Next batch going in is going to be Chipotle beef I got a good looking recipe for and then I’m wanting to make some sort of chicken soup for me for when I’m not feeling well. There isn’t a single store bought chicken soup I can stomach for some reason. Still trying to find the right recipe on that one.
As far as canning for others..... well mom and dad are the exception and mom has been warned there’s a $20 per jar core if they aren’t returned 🤣 She laughed but has been on the hunt for more jars I noticed. Guess she wants to be sure we have enough. 😬 They are dangerously low on salsa so it’s getting pretty touch and go 😉 Good luck finding tomatoes right now.

Not much of anything today but watch weather radar and tornadoes. It's all over now, quiet outside, stars peeping through light clouds.

Yesterday was bad weather prep day, changed oil in the generator, topped off fuel cans. I finally got around to putting a new female connector on an old power cord. It's 100ft long, used to lay on the ground between the shop and a fence charger by the corral. We ran tractors and farm equipment over it for more than a decade. I used an entire roll of electrical tape to seal all the nicks and scraps on it and fix a couple of breaks. Put on the new connector, ran continuity checks, the tested it with loads... works fine. I just hated to throw away a 100ft cord even though it looks its age.

@Double R Storms are over... A few days of sun then the next round of spring storms which are expected next Tuesday.

Pick of my cords... You can see the one I just repaired with yellow electrical tape. One cord was on a spool. The cord was in great shape but the spool had broken and cracked. Found a new spool on the net for $6. Also found some short black canvas straps that close with velcro and have a grommet for hanging on hooks. They work great for hanging power cords, nice and tidy.

Glad to hear that @Peanut but not so much about the coming storms. You got me thinking about our moving choices if the time ever does come where we actually can.
We just repaired a couple cords also. Mostly bad ends. Can’t see throwing out cords that can be repaired. Glad you got a stash of them. Definitely can’t have to many. That’s for sure.

Occasionally I place an order with amerzot. There are usually a few small cheap items that also get on my wish list.

This time I had been shopping under extension and power cords and found the accessory page. I found canvas straps with have a big grommet. They close with velcro. They are 2 inches wide, the hole in the grommet is 3/4 diameter. The circumference of the loop is 12 inches. If you need a bigger loop you can connect 2 of them together with the velcro and have a 24 inch loop.

They come 12 in a pack for $11.99, a buck a piece. They are great for hanging coils of rope, power cords, things that are normally a pain to hang and keep organized.

They are already on my list again for my next order. I'm getting another pack of these. Thought I'd post them in case someone else has need of something like these.

I have not ventured outside yet this morning...trash cans are blown over, patio furniture upturned, woke up at 2:15 AM to hubby shaking me and telling me to get ready to go to the cellar...he got dressed and I listened to the reports on the weather radio...they did not say tornado or go to shelter, so I opted to stay in the house and he went to the cellar...LOL....and very shortly after, the winds hit...I have never heard such loud wailing noises, the birdhouses were shaking on the porch, chairs going over, and then the hail hit..WOW....I was so glad I called Katy Bug last night and told her we could have hail and rain and to park her car under our sheds..I thought the windows were going to break...after the squall went through...radio said 70 MPH winds....I opened the door to find cats all over the porch..seems that birds got knocked down from the trees and they were feasting...sad, sad, sad...so today we will pick up the furniture, straighten up the trash cans, and go on with life...I do not like that kind of storm.....hubby said it was the first time he managed to get to the shelter without getting wet...LOL...I called Katy Bug and she was okay, no broken windows, and she had safely put her car under the shed...she listens to Grandma....LOL...hubby said 1/2 inch of rain in the gauge...had to buy alfalfa for Hombre today...been paying $16 for a square bale, price has gone up today to $17.25....guess costing more for gas to bring it in to the store....cannot win.
I'm glad you made it out OK. Those sorts of storms are not fun. I went through a supertyphoon on Guam back in the 90s. Winds broke the meter that detected wind speed. No cellars there, but we were in military housing that was built to withstand bombing. We could hear the winds howling and see trash cans and street signs flying by (Navy was supposed to take the signs down and tell people to bring trash cans in but they thought it was another false alarm so they ignored all the warnings). We had stuff tied down in our carport but the winds undid the ropes, picked the stuff up, and slammed it onto the car (minor damage fortunately). They installed the patio doors backwards so water was coming in. No potable water for almost a year, no power for 4 months, no tv for 6 months. Good thing we had a generator for the fridge.

I love rutabagas but the way I cook them is probably not that healthy....I boil the rutabagas and some potatoes together, and then mash them, add bacon pieces, onion and butter. It goes well with sausage. This is a very German dish.
I hope you get feeling better. Anxiety can really suck.
I can't remember having eaten rutabagas before but they were great cooked in stew. We used to bake butternut squash and add butter to eat them instead of mashed potatoes. Rutabagas with bacon and butter sounds awesome.

We get our stuff via Petmeds. When our old dog had to be put down & we updated the account to indicate it, they sent an e-mail and a condolences card in the mail. I think they use the term "crossed the rainbow bridge".

Played around with Sketchup- trying to draw the vanity for the guest bathroom but the angles and curves are giving me hell.
Took my brother to the dentist & waited in the truck while it was pouring rain. Took about an hour but she got his tooth out. She had to put in two sutures.
Went to Walmart to get prescriptions and had to wait an hour for my brother's to be ready. Got my Metformin. Pharmacist warned me of the most common side effect. It gave me the runs but I didn't get the abdominal cramping along with it.

I waited in the truck (with heated seats on bc my back doesn't like me today) for about 10 minutes while my brother was waiting on his prescriptions. I had already checked out and put the groceries in the cooler. Saw my best friend leaving Walmart and waved. He came over to chat a bit. He was there to use the bathroom since his sewer line is still clogged.

He hasn't been online much because one of his houseguests has been hogging his computer. The houseguest just got fired for missing a mandatory meeting at work. So he's there constantly using my friend's computer. I suspect it won't be long before he's kicked out again (I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time he's come to crash at my friend's house and each time he overstays his welcome). He doesn't respect boundaries.

Waiting for vet's office to open to take one of the cats in. Not sure if he has a sprain or if he broke something. He can't walk on one of his legs & I want to make sure it's nothing major.
