field report for grafted trees

the first 20 i done in early season theres 16 out of 20...so 4 failures..they would have taken and were growing till critter damage hit..i mean a graft cant grow out when critter takes it off and there no bud left to grow out.

second batch of 10 has 8 trees growing....so two failed and one of them the root stock actually died...so dont feel so bad....these late grafts grew a fraction of the early graft. i will make sure to not do that again getting root stock delivered later in season...only early stuff from now on.


i did see a bite out of seedling though...more damage control work i guess.

I am not giving up on my grafts because we are in a drought and the trees were dropping leaves and fruit. I do plan to cut if the branch above the grafts to give the grafts more sun light.

Been cleaning up the garden flower pots, tubs,washtubs.
All but one.
Estelle has watermelon growing in it.
They range in size half dollar to small basketball size.
She is so funny, she talks to them, rubs on them like she petting them.
Put small pinholes into the stock tank for drainage yesterday.
Will start filling it up with tree branches if I can find them, card board, soil and coffee grounds starting tomorrow.
Will have it ready by spring.
She's excited.

I planted spinach yesterday . I planted using my saved heirloom seeds . From experience know it will grow all winter and into the spring and early summer months , until it goes to seed and then the seed harvesting and planting cycle will take place once more . It will survive under snow as I can verify and soon after snow melts begin again its growth . We consider it delicious , sort of like eating candy . I am in zone 6 at a higher than average elevation . --- If things go sideways in the near future , we have made preparations for food production without having to rely on buying food .

Great easy article! I passed it along to a man I clean for, he is going to try to start peach trees in containers from seeds from peaches I gave him!

--- This video got me to thinking more on my winter survival garden . Perhaps someone else would like to ponder their survival garden for this winter . I already have my winter spinach planted but heard some deep rumbling a short time ago and if it proves to not be nuclear explosion but thunder from a rain cloud , I think I will dive out and plant some more winter plants " Russian red winter kale " . As things stand right now with the foreign invasion of women -less young men prowling about in some areas it has become dangerous for women to go to a grocery store these days . Anyways guys S.H.T.F. is here in some areas and for some folks , but as realist realize there is a real possibility there will be no grocery stores to go to by perhaps as early as this coming January . Getting a winter garden planted and tommorrow making a run to stock up on more feed for my egg laying chickens is my plan .

Not my garden unfortunately.. Went to a cousins farm earlier and picked muscadines and scuppernongs. She has two arbors, 2 varieties of scuppernongs on one and 3 varieties of muscadines on the other. I got about a gallon mixed, maybe a little more. There were a lot more muscadines so I got more of those.

My favorite late summer snack, they are so good! Got them washed and draining as soon as I got home. Gonna have a bowl in a bit.

For my fall/winter garden, Poltergist....
I've got cauliflower, broccoli, swiss chard, radish, lettuce, spinach ready for the greenhouses. Still have tomatoes, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes outside (it's 89 degrees out now). Some of the tomatoes and peppers will do well in the big pots in the green houses till probably January. Then I'll have not much going on end of January till first of March. But I'm good with growing 10 mo out of the year. I do have a lit shelf for a few things indoors if I want for those few months. Right now, one of the hotter greenhouses is lined with big pans of sunflower/oat seed that I sprout and use for animal feed.

Yesterday I was bush hogging the garden, done for the year. Except… here’s the few pitiful stalks of sugar cane I grew this summer. There was no planning, one moment I’m sitting in my chair and a friend called. 30min later I was planting sugar cane. So I’m happy I got something out of it. Not sure what I’m going to do with these stalks. Have to research it…

Also yesterday I got a surprise. Last spring I had set out some basil plants. I don’t remember what happened but for some reason I only harvested a handful of leaves before they bolted. In august they looked dead.

I was about to bush hog them yesterday when I noticed a couple plants had green leaves. It must have been the 7” of rain from hurricane francine two weeks ago. They came back to life. This morning I harvested a whole bowl of tender basil leaves. Got them in the dehydrator... an early fall gift.

And yet another surprise! My pepper plants were next to the basil, I didn't cut them down either. Just went back out and dug down in the deep grass...

I have late season jalapenos!

Nice late season harvest. All I have left is sweet taters, and a few regular taters that got missed when we dug them. And 2 scrawny tomato plants that I hope will make something before it frost.

Got email, my last order has been shipped.
Daffodils & Tulips came in, order was wrong, so got extra 100 mixed tulips & the mixed daffodils will be shipped tomorrow.
So 600 hundred bulbs for four yards.

Got the rest of my back ordered Mixed Daffodils, for a total of 600 bulbs four houses & a few for two other houses.
I also got the rest of my Garlic yesterday, the Shallots will not be here before Jan of 2025.
Got 2 pounds of Elephant garlic, one pound of Georgian Fire & one half pound Romanian Red just for fun.
So I guess I will be on my knees in the soil this week.
Sandy soil, bone mill & compost, pine fines mulch.

Pulled in the orange, olive, coffee, and fig trees inside. Low in the 30s over the next couple of days. Cleaned up the greenhouse to get it started for winter operation.

I may have a week or two until I have to bring my plant inside. Ginger really grew this summer.
