I finished grafting the fig tree yesterday (3 varieties on it) and put the rest of my scions in water to root. Also I cut a few scions off my peach tree and my apricot and stuck them to the old plum tree out back. We'll see what happens.
Today my youngest asked if we could plant lettuce so I gave him a seed pack of mesclun mix and he stomped it into the ground in the garden. 🤩

In other news, the indoor seedlings are growing well but I need to pick up some fertilizer. I'm seeing some stems turn purplish pretty early, and the squash and pumpkins are starting to bleach to yellow. I'm not sure why I don't have any on hand, but I'll fix that soon.

I noticed I was 2 days late starting onions.

All of my seeds were from 2022 or older but they gave been in a non- frost free freezer so I planted them in what seed starting mix I had.

Red Bull - Hybrid favorite of The Princess.
Patterson - hybrid long storage
Giant - Just for fun
Red Baron - heirloom
Creole - heirloom red

Placed order for fresh seeds and seed starting mix.

I ordered my Tromboncino squash seeds today, it's getting to be time to plant those. Hopefully I bought enough to last me a few years, I was caught a little off guard when I discovered I didn't have any left in my seed stash a couple weeks ago. I also ordered iris tectorum rose and purple heart sunflower seeds. I'm getting pretty low on the black sunflower seed and should order more, but maybe I'll wait until next year because the ones I bought last time appeared to be cross pollinated or F2 and many weren't true to color.

well i went over my budget a bit...but it is what it is...i am glad to know fully where these funds go to someone i support his life mission of breeding apple varieties.....the black and red was $65 and hella kitty was $56. the black and red went as high as $137. some stuff went over $200 and last year some went over $300.

lets hope i can make the grafts correctly and not have a big cry in spring/summer....lol

if i get any other varieties through his store i will let yall know. but i have most items he has released i am interested in....i think.
if your apples work ,let me know how you did it. I have yet to plant and grow one successful fruit tree ( the ones we have were here already)

Some of the cauliflower is ready. I need to start eating it before they rot from all the rain we've had. The last time I grew cauliflower it was the white variety, and the inside of the heads got icky, but these have been okay so far! I have a few of the broccoli on tap, too. View attachment 173089
those look great!! I grew white ones last year and yes, a lot of mine got eaten by bugs too . Got pest resistant hybrids this year, we'll see

Update on my cloning attempts.

English Walnut
The cuttings in water showed two sprouts that soon wilted. No roots. They all look dead.
The sand based cuttings may be showing some buds swelling.

Seedless grape vines
Buds swelling on a few cuttings.

Olive trees
New growth on 2 of six cuttings.

Elderberry
Cuttings in water ate developing roots and leaves. Most going strong but a few have lost leaves.
Cuttings in sand are looking good and resisting when tugged indicating roots forming.

But even more exciting is sprouts coming up out of the sand! No wonder Elders have a repudiation of life.

So cloning in sand rather than water is in the lead.

Maybe I should transition my fig cuttings to sand. 🤔

oh my oh my oh my....my sunshine got clouded over this morning....i got mad for 5 minutes of cussing...now its game on death to vermin...the blankiedy blank blank rabbits leveled my new seedling to the ground i started from seed last year....they were red fleshed but not skillcult stuff...it was my own...he has encouraged others to do what he has done with apples in their area to see what new types we can come up in all regions of u.s. and beyond....well.....maybe they can bounce back...we shall see...i have saved seed from more red fleshed apples. i wish i could get to maine because there were a bunch of abandoned orchards back in the mid 80's and they had all kinds of red fleshed apples growing and they were fantastic... not been back since so not even sure those orchards even still there and fallen to chainsaw and bulldozer developments...i hope not.

anyhow this to shall pass.......and so will the vermin....death rides a 40 grain hollow point now!

i failed...i really failed...didnt put double electric up like the others....i must be getting old and retarded or something...!

Got the garden plowed this afternoon. Went ahead an plowed all of it. We'll be getting spring rains and I wanted the surface crust broken and soft so water can soak deep. I plowed it fast and deep with all the angle I could crank into the gang disk. Throwing and displacing as much soil as possible.

The last 3 years dad has made a mess of the garden. Plowing up most of the stuff I planted and some things he planted. Prep and layout wasn't properly thought through making it difficult to plow and tend. Last year I only planted about a dozen peppers. I basically backed off and let him have it. I don't think he'll be doing anything out there this year... he can no longer walk to the mail box or get on a tractor. I told dad I'd grow anything he wanted, he refused to stop trying to do it himself long after he was unable. Maybe I can finally grow a few things now.

That rabbit thought he was awesome, but he was retarded.
Tomorrow is another day, and happy hunting

I’ve seen but never tried the colored variety- is there a flavor difference?

Walked thru both greenhouses today...one needs a cleanout, pots and other stuff knocked over, and I suspect the barncats were in there this winter and partied. Water jugs need to be filled. The other newer one has mice coming in and digging in the pots, so time to trap the inside of that greenhouse. The only thing growing in there is some onion and kohlrabi that survived the winter. Need to start lettuces in there. So basically all I did was make a list! Ha Ha. Maybe tackle some of it tomorrow.
