29 Days until Christmas

A Christmas memory: My dearest friend ever passed away in 2015 at the age of 94. She was a remarkable woman and a wealth of knowledge. I knew her and her husband for about 25 years. At one point probably mid to late 1990's, I was over at her house and she'd been decorating. They had no children, but she liked things to be festive and beautiful. She put up 3 trees that year! One was out on their front balcony with white lights and red bows that were fastened on so the wind blowing wouldn't carry them away. One was in the front room. This was the room you entered when walking into their house. It was Victorian that year and could have been in a magazine, a big full tree trunk to angel with ribbons, and garland, and lacy pearly glittery ornaments of various sorts. The last tree was my favorite and was in the basement in their small TV room. It was a slim-jim so it wasn't very big around, but was about 5' tall. It donned the old family ornaments as well as ones she had made and special ones acquired. We sat and chatted and admired the beauty of the season over a cup of "Blarney Cream" which is homemade Irish Cream. It was sometimes offered with some reference to milking the Blarney cow. It's a recipe she shared with me that I cherish and make this time of year. My first sip as I make a batch is always toasted to her. I was just putting together the shopping list and making sure I have enough ingredients and thinking of my dear friend. Merry Christmas Shirley.

Well, now that Thanksgiving is in the rearview mirror it's time to get down to some serious Christmas movie watching. Christmas song singing and list making. I sometimes try to start Christmas shopping and such earlier in the year but I just can't get the spirit moving until after Turkey Day has come and gone.

This one gets my heart pumping and my feet tapping every time.

Man , I'm somewhat depressed. I wanted to decorate my new house really nice this year.
Ain't happening. Don't even know where all decorations are. In boxes , in the barn , somewhere.

But, wait till next year....all out.

Jim
When Hubby and I were first seeing each other, Hubby didn't decorate at all. My daughter told him "You should put a wreath on your door so people know you're not a scrooge." 😂 I had actually forgotten about that until you posted this.

Your story, I remember a place I once lived. There was a dead end street 2+ blocks long. At the end was a big culdesac. Everyone on both sides of the street went all out at christmas. Some nights were bumper to bump with people driving through and looking.

One guy had a train he could sit on and pull a few kids with. The tracks were about 20inches apart. At night he'd just turn it on and let run by itself. It had it's own lights. That street was beautiful.

There was a place near my Grandparents place in Fl like that. We went every year until one of the houses sold to a grumpy old grouch that was anti Christmas. He was informed of the Halloween, Christmas and Easter displays before he even looked at the place.

We are all decorated, and almost ready to go. I still have to do Christmas shopping for my wife and son, which is unusually late for me. I have a few Fridays off, so not worried. I didn't want to go near a retail store on Black Friday, but now I am looking forward to shopping. One of my favorite parts of Christmas is finding that gift that makes my wife's eyes light up when she gets it. That makes all the hassle worthwhile.
