In late march four businessmen were sitting in the Channel Club Steak House in Sitka looking up at Mt. Edgcome, an extinct volcano. They had exactly the right amount of alcohol to drink and came up with this idea. One owned a heavy equipment company and had several worn out heavy equipment tires. Another, Ken Eichner, owned Temsco Helicopters. Temsco choppered the tires to the crater of Mt. Edgcome and on April 1 they set the tires on fire. Not wishing to cause a total panic they notified the State and Sitka police. Nobody thought to notify the Coast Guard who sent their helicopter to explore the eruption. The CG did not appreciate the joke.

Ken Eichner was a family friend far before I was born. Three generations of his family have been customers of ours. I was on the plane nine days ago with the son of the guy with the tires. The wife used to have the recipe for the Channel Club steak seasoning.
