Back in the day - - "redneck" was a term applied by, um, Civilized folk to farmers and other 'country' people who tended to work out in the sun a lot. Sometimes without a neckerchief; kerchief; bandana; whatever you want to call them thangs. May have morphed into a term for folks got excited and "used strong language and got all het up". Sure, we do talk funny in our original dialect. Most of it is just to shorten the time it takes to say something.
And I hate to burst their bubble, but it is not a derogatory term and never has been.
Today it means someone that can accomplish amazing things with little or nothing to work with.
