Back in the day - - "redneck" was a term applied by, um, Civilized folk to farmers and other 'country' people who tended to work out in the sun a lot. Sometimes without a neckerchief; kerchief; bandana; whatever you want to call them thangs. May have morphed into a term for folks got excited and "used strong language and got all het up". And I hate to burst their bubble, but it is not a derogatory term and never has been.
Today it means someone that can accomplish amazing things with little or nothing to work with.
