I am 64 this year & I remember my father put up post in the field to teach my mother how to parallel park. We kids thought it was funny, but we were the only ones.
Come to think of it, in 55 years, never saw her parallel on the street.

When I was teaching my kids to drive we used the small cheap home soccer field road cones and plastic milk bottles with sand with an orange plastic driveway marker to practice with..

It took 3-4 sets of these markers before they were ready to drive the test...
