I have to be honest. When I tell folks I’m out hunting wild medicinal plants… I get odd looks, from everybody! I’m the only person I know who does this within 200 miles in any direction. Of course I’m going to get odd looks!
When out scouting plants, any random people I might see I avoid, usually trouble. But, I make a point of stopping to meet people who live near places I park or can be seen entering a forest. A few people who would naturally wonder about a strange vehicle in a unusual place. I would be concerned about anything unusual within several miles of my home. I want those people to know who I am. It helps that my family has lived in this rural area for 180yrs.
Today I purposely stopped at a house just to meet the resident in the new area I’ve expanded into. A retired guy, air force, nice guy. We talked for a half hour. It was warm on the porch but he had a fan running.
He got a kick out of the fact I still keep one of my dog tags on my key ring, in case I have an accident they’ll know my blood type. (Just an excuse, like having it on there.) We swapped a few stories too.
Turns out the guy knows 2 of my cousins, was a good friend to one (passed away). The guy had also heard of yellow root. Found it interesting I had just harvested a bucket full. I’d brought a plant to show him. That alone usually convinces folks I’m on the up and up. Or at least brought visual aids to entertain them…
Anyway, he was helpful. Filled in blanks on my old topo map, drew a fork in a creek I didn’t know about. He even told me about several good places to pull off the nearby roads and park out of sight… Seems his wife wouldn’t let him drink beer in the house. So for years he’d go for a drive, park off the road out of sight and have a few. He knew all the good places a sheriff patrol wouldn’t notice or anyone else. (did I mention he was funny too!)
He told me about a couple old logging roads through some “Timber Co” lands. He knew the guys who leave game cameras out and where to look for them. He was a wealth of information. Next big chunk of fat wood I find I’ll leave it on his porch. Had firewood on his porch but I didn’t see any fat wood there or his wood pile. I know he’ll love to have a chunk. I’ll bring him one his grandchildren will even use.
Fatwood here is most often big stumps, 3ft in diameter is common. I’ll find him a nice piece and just leave it on his porch.
These are fatwood stumps found here on the farm. They are average size.
