I'm leaving work in about 45 mins to bring my dog for follow-up appt with the specialist. I don't remember if I posted it before, the specialist believes that he has a chronic inflammatory bowel disease and that's why he wasn't eating/lost a quarter of his weight/liver values were off. I've been giving him a steroid to reduce the inflammation and he's improved almost back to normal. He gained a couple pounds back (a couple more to go to be at original weight) and he's eating much better. His fur even feels soft again. I'm curious to see what the bloodwork says but I'm happy he's feeling better.

Wingnut, Is that a giant dogfennel? It looks like a version of some of the weeds in my yard on gamma rays!

Chaosdown, I hope your dog gets a definitive diagnosis and that it is treatable and that your dog will be well again.

It has been a while since I visited the Ridge and it shows. After 6Ah of weed Wacker battery it is obvious that hidden in the 5' tall weeds are pumpkin plants.

I has whack gently not to damage the pumpkin plants and only clipped one leaf. Another 10 Ah of batteries it looked like this.

There a few pumpkin plants and there are flowers but no fruit yet.

I then visited the old growth end and found a young deer sneaking up on me. A bit on the skinny side.

I was pleased to find stuff I planted 5 years ago or more. It had already dropped its seeds.

Any day on The Ridge is a good day.

Magus, it looks like dogfennel which is toxic. Supposedly a bug repellent. Has a rather strong odor which sort of reminds me of carrot and something else that I can't place). But the lovebugs aren't repelled by them. I actually see bugs climbing on them all the time.
Nice garden, Ben!
Still waiting on the floor mix to dry more and cats are piling on me.

Went to Mount Holly and trimmed rosebushes at the old cemetery, then checked my cradles.
Went to JoAnn in the next town and picked out fabric for a friend's baby bib.
Went to Lowe's and got connectors for a dishwasher and purple mums for my cradles.
Talked about mulching the cradles.
Went to Walmart.
Went home.
Texted my sister...found out there is a new bakery in town. Found out that new bakery is Buddy V's. It had to be the Cake Boss so that means I will have to try it. And it's actually in the same town as JoAnn.

Today is our 38th anniversary. And we aint killed each other yet. 😂😂

We went out for a nice dinner, she had a filet minion. I had broiled shrimp, scallops, nice piece of cod, and a nice big crab are.

Now we are stuffed. Blessed with another year of putting up with each other

Rats. my glasses are never on my nose when I need them. I should have known sweet fennel never gets that big. :( ctrl + again!

That looks like a tumbleweed that is not dried out yet, Wingnut. Good to get them while they're green.
Housework started, company not coming till 4 tomorrow, so there's time. Went to town and gassed up the old truck, got the mail, got animal feed.

When I was a kid, and a bit thereafter. We cultivated a strip of weeds about ten feet wide and 400 feet long. the ragweed and saw-briers were a good 10' high, snakes tended to stay there as did other normally unwanted things, they grew so tight even a dog couldn't penetrate it without paying in a pound of flesh. at the end of it was a cellar maybe 30X 20' full of broken masonry, filthy water and foot long rats. Our garage was broken into several time, but NEVER our house.
(FYI, Dad was a mechanic. :) )
The one time they tried was the night my mother died. I did not appreciate their attitude.
Anyways. nature can be your friend if you point her in the right direction. Not even a meth head would climb through ten feet of briers just to get shot at.

I don't think it's a tumbleweed, though I have those on the property and I'm also removing them... I think the tall weed may be toxic to some degree, and it may be causing the rashes on my uncovered forearms (above the welding gloves) and my lower legs (above the socks), as the brush frequently touches those areas during my cleanup efforts. Same may go for the tumbleweeds, which aren't helping either, they have scratchy little points on 'em and they've been adding to the damage. Meh, I made pretty good progress today, every little bit o' work I do helps clear my yard of goatheads and other bothersome weeds... as y'all can imagine, many of you from direct experience, I will be overjoyed to be done with tiresome weeding this season, lol. And next year, I won't water the open areas, expecting pretty wildflowers to emerge from the soil and gravel... that was a mistake which I will NOT make again, lol.

Read a good Western this afternoon: THE HOSTILE HILLS, by E. E. Halleran, it sums up the situation in the Black Hills after rumors of gold started flying, and the U.S. Army was ordered to prevent gold-seekers from entering sacred ground. Custer was still alive, and he didn't help matters by squawking about the gold, but he got his not too long afterward, the arrogant b@stard. Anyway, the book covers how the federal gubmint broke yet another treaty with the Injuns, and this time the land concerned was sacred to those Injuns, which is why they put up a fight for it. Can't really fault the Injuns, since they had treaty after treaty broken and they ultimately got the shaft... sure, there were atrocities committed on both sides, but the bottom line is that a form of genocide occurred, and that program included practically wiping out the buffalo which were a prime source of food for the Injuns. A sad tale indeed... :(

Oh, well, $h!t happens, especially when greed is a factor... if you look back upon human history, greed has played a major part in many wars. Too bad folks can't simply be happy with what they have, as long as what they have allows them to live comfortably, with a roof over their heads, food to eat, some personal freedoms, etc. Moi, I've never been infected with the sickness of greed, I'm more likely to be generous, as I know I'm only here on this planet for so long, and friends are good to have. I'm not an easy mark, mind you, and I certainly do NOT make a good victim, lol, but I strive to live with honor and integrity, ya know? I've seen the way some others live, the thugs & hood rats and whatnot, but that way of life is not for me, I sleep easier at night knowing that I dealt with others fairly and gave some folks the benefit of the doubt. Principles of Zen Buddhism have helped me immensely over the years...

Anyway, I'm gonna watch a movie here in a bit, now that I've gotten my reading fix, lol. I have several library DVDs I haven't seen yet, and I may check the streaming stick to see what's available in this new calendar month. Tomorrow morning I will be back on weed patrol, I still have several days of pulling the non-goathead weeds, and I wanna keep an eye on the goatheads too. Those blasted goatheads keep rallying like Infantry soldiers, and there are BATTALIONS of them... possibly even DIVISIONS, lol. They're tough & salty customers, I'll give 'em that much... they remind me of the war I waged on the highly-invasive Brown Widow spiders in Coronado, I spent several YEARS fighting those nasty critters, and I never did kill 'em all, but we sold the property and the spiders were no longer my problem, lol. I gave the buyers fair warning about the spiders, as those arachnids are venomous and folks have DIED from their wicked bites.

Another idea to deal with weeds.

Cover with a black cloth.

Was looking forward to being home this weekend. I've been gone the past 2 weekends and it canning/garden season. This doesn't work. Well Hubby was texting youngest niece last night after I went to bed and found out that she's riding a bull Sunday so he said we'd be there. So we are evidently driving the 5.5 hr. trip watching and coming back another 5.5 hrs. It's gonna be a long day!

As my friend Bacpacker would say, "Happy gettin' hitched day." 😊

Wingnut, did the giant weed have an odor to it? It really does look like the dogfennel in my yard on steroids.
I plan to put down some landscaping cloth over the stupid chinaberry trees once I cut them down. Just need to get the new battery and charger for my jawsaw and take them out as much as possible. Still debating whether to spray some sort of chemical on the leaves though. I suppose worst case if they still grow back I can resort to that. I need to get that area all de-weeded and cleared so my friend can get under there to hook up more plumbing. Still need cold water to the kitchen sink and a hosebib outside.

Floor leveling mix was almost fully dry last time I checked over an hour ago.

Backlash : wasn't your time to go. Something almost like that happened to us once on a trip, if our truck had been 2 seconds faster we would have all died ( big semi crash right it front of us, I stopped inches from it)

Patchouli : sorry for your loss

Bacpacker: Happy Anniversary!

Wingnut, I feel for you and your weeds! We just got done with the goat boy pasture weeds. First I tried flamethrowing them, but it kept going out. We pulled some out, but finally we gave up and sprayed the entire pasture with 2 4 D ( it leaves the grass only) . SInce there was nothing left but grass and lots of weeds the goats don't eat unless starving, which, we don't ever let it get to that
I just hope the grass takes over after removing the weeds.
That giant plant does look a little like fennel, I have some in the garden ( for eating) but it's much smaller

Took puppy to vet yesterday for his last set of shots including rabies
Went to RK with him afterwards to buy more 2 4 D and husband some new boots ( yikes $170 !!! ) If prices keep going up like they are we will be flat broke in a few years and not make it to retirement:(

Taking one last doe goat to the auction tomorrow . We are only keeping the best ones this year so cut down on having so many to feed in winter. I hate seeing any go, but we had to do a heavy cull this year to make it more manageable. Also picking up a ram ( for breeding the sheep) from a farm. We get one there every year and sell him in January after his job is done. Rams are not fun to have around once they get big so we get a little one and sell him again asap. We have never lost money on that.

I now cover up my plants that are getting eaten by rabbits with sheets over night. I have seen the rabbits early in the morning before sun goes up. So far it is working.

Today I'm stuck at work staring at the clock until 3. Then need to make a run to the packie to get stuff for the long weekend. Woo! Fishing tomorrow!

The vet appt was great, they were thrilled with the progress he's made in such a short time, he's put muscle mass back on, has more energy and is eating well. Looks like the guess that it was an inflammatory disease was correct. The inflammation was blocking his ability to absorb nutrients from his food as well as affecting his liver and other things. So we'll continue the steroid (eventually lowering it) and he'll be on two heart meds, assuming his blood work comes back good for his liver. They did one test in house, he had been anemic the last time and that has now completely resolved. So we're on the right track and I'm happy. After the year we've had, we didn't need to lose our dog too. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to convince him to eat dog food after having people food for so long. 🤔

I'm sure I have some sort of fennel on my property, I will take pics of the weeds and post 'em later... looks like a beautiful morning outside, I'm just having a cup of herbal tea before I water the trees & plants. After that, I will do a bit of weeding, but I won't tackle quite as many weeds per session... I have a few smaller areas to clear, so I've decided to just take 'em one area at a time. Overall, I'm making good progress, it was just brutal there for awhile because some weeds crept up on me while I was waging war on the goatheads. I can't imagine having to clear a much larger property, it would take a brush hog or tractor to do it, no way could one guy clear the lot by hand. Anyway, I sincerely hope that this is the toughest weeding season I will have to face, and that things will get easier in seasons ahead... I know the goathead problem will be much less severe next season, which is reason enough to keep at it, lol. Nothing lasts forever!!!

P.S. Chaosdawn, thanks for reminding me and others about the holiday weekend, I had entirely forgotten!!!

I woke up before the sun came up and haven't been able to get back to sleep but haven't been motivated to do anything. Legs are protesting a lot. I need to take some magnesium. I called my doctor's office bc I got a bill in the mail for April 22 this year. I haven't gone since January. Thought maybe my family members went that day. Clerk said nothing showed for any of them on that date and their system shows I owe nothing.
Took pics of my bathroom floor now that the leveling mix is dry. Trying to motivate myself to get up and clean.

Packie, you true New Englander!

I took off today to make it a long weekend. I have some paperwork to do when I'm not working outside. I harvested about 7 gallons of green beans so there is that to do. I have allergies for most green things and the pole beans put me to itching like I was dipped in battery acid. Going to take a shower and do laundry, then try to get back at it. My extra rain barrels arrived last night, I hope to get stands in place to get them plumbed into the irrigation system. I am short a few fittings and valves so I may need to run for parts at some point.

I also took an extra day off today to make for a long weekend.
Painted the half bath in dad’s house. The plumber removed the toilet because he’s getting a new one – the one that’s in there is the one that was put in when the house was built in 1969 and it’s too low for him to get off of. Not having that in there made it really easy to paint that little tiny hole of a bathroom. We do have to go to Lowe’s tomorrow to get trim paint for it. What I had was eggshell and I want to put an easy to clean gloss on the door and window trim.

Put last weeks canning down on the shelves. Did a little organizing in the pantry closet. Gonna try and get the lawn mowed this afternoon and some laundry done.
